Creating a Collection of Commentaries (or other exegetical books)

How would I go about finding all of the books in my library that contain commentary or dedicated exegesis on the book of Matthew? I'm not interested in all books that simply reference the book of Matthew, but those that are dedicated to expounding it. This is particularly relevant given all of the collections on Community Pricing that are aimed at particular books of the Bible. I would like to create my own collections in Logos that would contain the books from Community Pricing (when I get them) as well as any others already in my collection.

I tried to do a Search using the Title field contains Matthew, but that returned 14 resources, none of which actually had Matthew in the Title (at least as I define Title).

How did you do that "Search"?

If you make a Collection with the defining rule type:commentary title:matthew that should go a good way towards giving you what you want. But you might pick up a few more resources that don't have Matthew in the title and are nonetheless substantially about Matthew if you expand the rule to this:

type:commentary (title:matthew OR subject:matthew)

You might still find that includes some resources you wouldn't want in such a collection (e.g., Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible -- while it will contain a section on Matthew it isn't largely devoted to that book so won't have as much detail as other more dedicated commentaries). However you can exclude those by dragging them up to the "Minus these resources" section of the Collections tab (be sure to drag them by some other field than the icon or title, as that will open them).

This method would need to be refined somewhat for other books where there are variants or synonyms for the titles. For example Revelation/Apocalypse, or 1 John / I John / First John.

I'm not sure how you input your search - you may want to look at the wiki, especially http://wiki.logos.com/Library__#Using_the_Find_box_to_filter_your_resource_list_in_the_Library_window and

In addition to Rosie's excellent tips for your collection, I'll add that sometimes resources that comment on a specific book or section may not be in type commentary.

My collection rule for Matthew is mostly taken from the wiki and reads

Type:Commentary AND (Subject:Matthew,Title:(Matthew,”Sermon on the Mount”,”First Series, Volume VI”,”First Series, Volume X”))

but I manually include my collection of one-volume commentaries, which has study bibles (type:bible notes) as well as monograph-resources like Vine's Complete Writings
