LOUW-NIDA Question. . .

Greetings,

Several days ago, I had a problem with L4, someone graciously helped me solve the problem. However, I noticed (unless I'm totally confused and have not noticed it before), that in the NT in the interlinear view at the bottom I have Stong's and Louw-Nida. But in the OT, I only have Stong's and not Louw-Nida. When I click on the display options in the OT, and choose only LN, I get a space and no Louw-Nida.

Question: unless I've missed it all these years, I'm sure I had an OT Louw-Nida entry at the bottom interlinear view. Is there something wrong I must fix, or am I just off the wall here?

Any suggestions? I think I'm missing my LN interlinear view for the OT.

Alfredo ... from your message, I assume you're using one of the reverse interlinears, such as ESV?

If you have the resource 'Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Hebrew' by James Swanson, you can get Logos to do similar to Louw-Nida: http://www.logos.com/product/692/a-dictionary-of-biblical-languages-w-semantic-domains-hebrew

- In your library, where you prioritize your resources, add the Swanson resouce ABOVE any of your Strongs hebrew resources (if you have any Strongs resources prioritized). If you have TWOT prioritized, you may need to put Swanson above TWOT.

- Then in the reverse interlinear, expose the Strongs line (along with the Louw-Nida line)

- When you're in the OT, click on the Strongs number and it will pull up Swanson's semantic domains (organized the same as Louw-Nida but for hebrew)

- If you work in aramaic (e.g. Daniel, etc), prioritize the aramaic one too (Swanson has 3 resources, 1 each for hebrew, aramaic and greek)

Yes, I am using the reverse interlinear ESV. I did what you suggested and it worked as you stated. This is fine for me.

This doesn't make best use of the DBL Lexicon, because:-

homographs (same word with different meanings) have the same Strong's number eg. "asleep" Gen 41.5 vs. "chronic" Lev 13.11
incorrect Strong's number may be applied eg. "power" Gen 31.29 - a derivative of el which can also be translated "god/God" (should be H410).

Accessing DBL Hebrew via the lemma will usually find the correct homograph entry; which is important when it is assigned different LN numbers. Therefore prioritise DBL Hebrew above other Hebrew lexicons incl. TWOT, TLOT, BDB and Strong's.
