How can I compare different bible Chapters in Logos ?

Hello All!

Good evening, I am trying to do a comparism between Genesis 1 and John 1, Logos has a compare tool which compares the same chapter in different bible translations, but I am trying to compare the different Chapters in the same translations, does Logos offer this functionality ?

I don't think Logos has this capability. Can you explain more about what you are trying to do & why?

Fred - you could always open two panes with the same Bible and compare the text that way.

The Creator came (1–14). Compare this passage with Genesis 1 and note the emphasis on light and life. Moses wrote about the old creation, but John wrote about the new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). He is the creative Word and the living Word who reveals the Father to us. In His many miracles, Jesus showed His power as Creator. He is a faithful Creator, and you can trust your life to Him (1 Pet. 4:19).

The Savior came (15–34). He came with grace and truth, not law and judgment. He revealed the Father and gave the Holy Spirit to those who trusted Him. He is the Lamb of God who alone can take away sins. The blood of lambs covered the sins of the Jews, but the blood of Christ takes away the sins of the whole world (v. 29; 4:42).

The Master came (35–51). Jesus called a few men to follow Him, and He transformed their lives and used them to transform the lives of others. Simon’s new name (Peter, meaning “a stone”) symbolized a new beginning in his life. He became a part of the new creation, sharing in the fullness of grace (v. 16). The King came (49). Jesus came to His own creation and everything in creation obeyed Him; but His own people did not receive Him (v. 11; 12:37–41). During His trial before Pilate, His kingship was the paramount issue (18:33–19:22); and it is still the issue today. Who is the king of your life?

I think you could trick Logos to do this by e.g. making your own PB bible from the John 1 chapter of your translation of choice (there are sample bibles where you may only need to paste in the verses) and run the Logos comparison tools as if they were different translations.

The result would be pretty meaningless, since the sort of comparison being asked for is not a word-by-word comparison, which is what Logos's text comparison tool does. One needs to step back and look at the whole chapters and understand the content and compare from that distance. If I went verse-by-verse, word-by-word, everything would show up as different between the two and it wouldn't tell me anything. The only words that would be the same would be "In the beginning..." and then it would diverge from there.

okay, after thinking over it again, you're right.

Maybe that's the result of it anyway. Using a slightly refined search like the one presented above - (compar* NEAR ("Genesis 1", "Gen 1")) AND (compar* NEAR ("John 1", "Jo 1", "Jn 1")) - my Logos brought up Olshausen's commentary who writes: The customary comparison of בְּרֵאשִׁית, the beginning, (Gen. 1:1) with this passage seems to me inappropriate, because it refers to that which is created, whereas our passage has respect to the eternal being of the Son in the bosom of the Father. Hence the ἐν ἀρχῇ, in the beginning, is not to be understood as meaning “in the beginning of the creation,” but, in the original beginning, i.e., from eternity. A parallel is found in John 17:5, where the Lord himself speaks of his existence with the Father, πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι, before the world was.* Here, therefore, even the phrase ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς, from the beginning, could not be employed, although it may be used synonymously with ἐν ἀρχῇ, when a limited period is spoken of, to which something is referred, or from which something is to be reckoned. ( logosres:olshausen01;ref=BibleALFNT.Jn1.1-2;off=-1121 ) Even the meaning of "light" in Gen 1 and Jn 1 is to be discussed.

I'd expect every commentary on John 1 to discuss the similarity to Gen 1 at least to some extent, although the search does not give many of them. It does yield Lenski, who writes logosres:lenski04;ref=Bible.Jn1.1;off=-3019

Even the first readers of John’s Gospel must have noted the resemblance between the first phrase ἐν ἀρχῇ, “in the beginning,” and that with which Moses begins Genesis. This parallel with Moses was, no doubt, intentional on John’s part. The phrase points to the instant when time first began and the first creative act of God occurred. But instead of coming down from that first instant into the course of time, John faces in the opposite direction and gazes back into the eternity before time was. We may compare John 17:5; 8:58, and possibly Rev. 3:14, but scarcely ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς in Prov. 8:23, for in this passage “from the beginning” refers to Wisdom, a personification, of which v. 25 reports: “I was brought forth,” something that is altogether excluded as regards the divine person of the Logos.

This opens up the wealth of the Old Testament references to the Logos. “And God said, Let there be light,” Gen. 1:4. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness,” Gen. 1:26. “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,” Heb. 11:3. “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made.… For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast,” Ps. 33:6 and 9. “He sent his word,” Ps. 107:20; 147:15. These are not mere sounds that Jehovah uttered as when a man utters a command, and we hear the sound of his words. In these words and commands the Son stands revealed in his omnipotent and creative power, even as John says in v. 3: “All things were made by him.” This active, omnipotent revelation “in the beginning” reveals him as the Logos from all eternity, one with the Father and the Spirit and yet another, namely the Son.
