Nothing Opens Since Logos 4 Update

Dale - Have you tried starting the program and immediately pressing command? This will bring a pop up / log in box. Don't change your username & password, but click "use blank layout."

By pressing the command key at this stage of loading the program enables logging for the single session. It might be helpful for you to upload your logs.

When you uninstalled, did you just re-run the installer, or did you delete everything? Is the indexer running when you load logos?

Yes, I did this and it says it is synchronizing, then nothing shows up - completely blank. It doesn't show any logs.

I notice that the Logos 4 file does not exist In Library > Application Support.

When I uninstalled I just moved the program in Applications to the Trash Bin and then downloaded from the internet and installed that file.

I'm not a techie, so we may have to wait until one shows up… Just to double check though… You do know that the users library in 10.7 is hidden by default, right? [Press and hold "Option" key to reveal it].

It sounds like you have already done this and that there was no Logos 4 folder there. Am I understanding you right? [Library/ Application Support/ Logos4]

Unfortunately, you are looking in the wrong place. You need to be in your user account library. In my screen shot below, I have revealed my user account library. It is hidden by default. I am pressing and holding the "option" key to reveal it. Once you click on "Library," you will then click on "Application Support," followed by "Logos4."

The path "Devices > Macintosh HD > Library" is the OS X Library shared by all users on a Mac. Logos 4 Mac creates a folder Logos4 inside the Applications Support folder within the Library folder for your user account: ~/Library

Your ~/Library path should have "Devices > Macintosh HD > Users > username > Library > Application Support > Logos4 > Logging

Note: username is your OS X user account name.

Would like to look at diagnostic log files (preferable in a zip file attached to a reply); wiki has Mac Troubleshooting => How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac that includes OS X Lion note:

Thanks for your help. I found the Logos 4 file in the Library > Application Support. I removed it to Trash Bin and also removed the Logos 4 application to Trash Bin. I rebooted my computer and installed Logos 4. Now it is installing more thoroughly and is in the process of downloading my 15.78 GB of resources. So that is a hopeful sign.

Wonder about free disk space ? Estimating index creation to need ~10 GB while index being created, with ~ 9 GB after merging all index postings (so ~ 25 GB in Logos 4 folder).

Unfortunately, Logos 4.5 indexing speed is slow. Using a 2.93 GHz i7 to completely index 16.91 GB of Resources took 10 hours 31 minutes (with 2 hours to merge postings). While indexing is in progress, can read resources in Logos 4 Mac, but searching does not work (including visual filters). While indexing is in progress, may want to change program setting for "Use Internet" to No since not need sync interference with indexing. After indexing is done and search is usable, then could change "Use Internet" back to Yes. If have lots of Notes (and/or Highlighting), sync can take awhile to download and merge.

Curious about Mac Model ? CPU, Ram ?

Another sign in option is work offline, which may have been an option earlier. Typically uninstall and reinstall is only needed when something is corrupt in application bundle, which shows up with certain messages in Logos4.log diagnostic file.

Looks like we are in the same boat so to speak as I experienced the same issue last night and tried the same things. How did you reinstall go? Mine looked promising because I was able to get everything working without resources, but this morning once the resources were all downloaded I was back to where I started, to main screen and the menu's missing a lot of stuff. I posted my issues this morning. My temp work around is loading logos in a VMWare fusion install of XP that I have. Let me know if your reinstall did work for you.

Here again, on a glorious Alaska morning! I got up at 3 am and the resources were loading at 50%. Stayed up till 5 am when the resources finished but then the program went into some other installing mode.

Now when the program starts up it is wanting to index. After four shutdowns and startups I noticed four logos icons on the top of my screen. All of them say that Logos 4 is indexing. I paused all four.

Bottom line: The program is still doing exactly the same as last night!!! When the program opens, there is no Logos window that opens. The only thing i see are the menu pull-down tabs at the top of my screen. When I click on Go > Home, nothing happens (still blank screen). When I click on Go> Search, nothing happens (still blank screen). When I click on Layouts, it just pulls down a blank, white layout that is not even clickable.

When I attempt to open Logos 4 by holding the "ctrl" key, the "Preparing Your Library" window and spinner shows up for a few seconds and then disappears .... nothing else shows up!

I feel so frustrated with absolutely no time to be dealing with technical issues. I have invested thousands of dollars in Logos 4 because I love its potential! I have invested on two travels to Washington to attend a Camp Logos, so I have made a big commitment and investment in this company. Yet so far this year it has been a horrible disaster. First, the Reading Plan has been completely inoperable at times and does not sync with my iPhone or iPad. This is the method I chose to read my Bible for personal devotions and it has completely messed up my rhythm. I have sold a lot of my paper resources in favor of the electronic method for sermon development. It seems like I have invested unwisely.

I am not a computer techie and don't have the time or energy to try and fix this myself. Don't know what to do!

Hi Dale

Since you are using the stable version of Logos you can call customer support and ask them to help you out.

Before doing that though I would do a couple of things.

1. Check that you do not have any stray copies of Logos lying about in your system - including in the trash bin. There should only be one copy of 'Logos Bible Software 4' and that should be in the Applications folder.

2 Check that you do not have any stray copies of the folder 'Logos4' lying about in your system - including in the trash bin. There should only be one copy of 'Logos4' and it should be in HD-Users-your user name-Library-Applications Support.

3 Resist the temptation to delete anything; and download a new copy of the Logos Engine and install.

4 Once the Logos Engine has down loaded - log in if required (if this fails now is the time to call Customer Support)

5 If log in proceeds allow to download resources and index as required - preferably overnight making sure that the 'sleep' settings are such that the computer is not interrupted during the process. (if this fails now is the time to call Customer Support).

I don't think that you have wasted your money - Logos is a strange program for the Mac but is does work well for most people. If you want to make an inexpensive call to Logos you should consider using Skype which is what I use from the UK.

By the way deleting Logos and/or Logos4 folder and reinstalling is rarely effective in sorting out problems with the program when using a Mac and always makes for long waits while downloads and other elements get replaced.

The only good news I have for you is that the update to the mobile app is in RC2 stage. I don't know when it will be released, but suspect it will be very soon. I have been using my iPhone & iPad for my reading plans successfully for a couple of weeks now.

While the particular problem that we seem to be sharing is frustrating I think that you will find Logos to be well worth the investment. Granted, there are some things about the mac version that I wished worked better but it is still the best thing out there in my estimation. I don't use Logos for personal devotions, I do think that there are a couple of other products that beat Logos in the tablet/smartphone arena. So I'm not concerned about the syncing issue that you referenced but I can understand why that is an issue. Too bad we can't take the best of all of the things out there and squish them altogether to get something perfect. But for sermon prep and research papers it has been fantastic.

Four Logos icons in menu bar is quite unusual (personally have only encountered two at the same time).

Please enable diagnostic logging; can download and use an applescipt application 5504.Logos4MacLogging.app.zip to display your logging setting, then change to enable logging.

Restart Mac, which should cause one Logos blue icon to appear in menu bar.

Launch Logos 4 Mac, then quickly press and hold command key until Sign In appears (release command key), then click “Use blank layout” and “Work offline”, followed by clicking Sign in

If Logos 4 Mac crashes (or just disappears), would like to look at diagnostic logs, wiki Mac Troubleshooting => How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac has the log posting steps, including link to Logos Log Scribe application to create a zip file on your desktop (copies console messages, then compresses contents of your Logging folder for posting).

If Logos 4 Mac opens, suggest using Library to open specific resources. Caveat: many Logos 4 items need indexing complete to be usable (e.g. Passage Guide, Exegetical Guide, Biblical People, Places, Things, ...)

Other option is contacting Logos Mac Support => http://www.logos.com/about/contact (albeit phone lines are closed on weekends)

Edit: wondering if old reading plan sync data (or favorites) from iOS is affecting Logos 4.5a on Mac, which added reading plan update using Sync v2 framework. If sync data is causing Logos 4 Mac issue, anticipate happening again after uninstall and reinstall once sync data is downloaded from Logos servers. Depends on what Logos needs to do to fix sync data issue, recognize potential for Logos 4.5a service release along with mobile app update. Thankful Logos will fix and improve sync across platforms; unfortunately does not help for sermon tomorrow.

Bingo, mine is working. If you have and Iphone or ipod try deleting the reading plans. Close down logos. Perhaps it would be best to simply restart the mac although not strictly necessary except to make sure that both Logos and the indexer are off. Resart Logos and give it time to sync (shouldn't take too long).

load the Logos app from the apple Store. Once it is installed, login with the same credentials that you use in Logos. It will sync and on the home page display any reading plans that you have. if you swipe over the reading plan to the right (there is an ">" ) it presents a delete button. I deleted them from my windows install, but the iphone app still showed them so I deleted them from there as well. I think that the only ones that matter are ones that you created. for instance I created one for My Utmost for His Highest, I think that is what was causing my issues.

Concur, especially since your Logos4.log file had a number of errors for "My Utmost for His Highest" before crashing.

If the answer is that I can only do it on the macbook itself, then that won't work because my problem is that the program doesn't open up on my macbook.

Would like to look at your MacBook diagnostic log files.

I will try and figure out how to find my MacBook diagnostic files. Just a time issue right now. Multitasking on several issues.

Logos is indexing (13%) and it is 6pm. Has being doing it all day and has totally bogged down my computer. I have had to pause it numerous times. Rebooted my computer and it started indexing back to the beginning.

I followed up on Dale Heinold's suggestion and great tip on removing the reading plans from my iPhone and iPad. I didn't know about the little swipe trick. I suspect the problem is associated with the reading plans because it the way it is responds on the iPhone and iPad is erratic. First of all, it showed six Bible reading plans and I have only had one. I swiped and deleted the reading plans. The last one remaining shows a red delete button, but when I click on it, the last reading plan does not disappear, or remove. When I shut down my iPhone, and it goes "back to the cloud" it brings up six reading plans again. I've deleted them about three times.

Meanwhile Logos 4 on the Mac still does not bring up any screen layout for me. I've tried starting it with the "Ctrl" key and start two ways: Offline and/ or with a blank layout. It still fails to bring up any screen for me - just the pulldown menu at the top.

I'll try and figure out the diagnostic file thing when I get some time.

Observation: when diagnostic logging is enabled, Logging folder has several files. Logos4Error.log only has specific crash stack; Logos4.log file typically has useful contextual information. Likewise Indexer.log file can have contextual information, including if indexing is complete. Hence wiki => How to Report Bugs in Logos 4 Mac steps include attaching zip file, which has the Logging folder files.

Looking at Logos4Error.log, noticed several crashes, including one today.

Apologies: without diagnostic log file context, personally have nothing to suggest.

Ok, thanks everyone for your help. I learned some things through this.

I called tech support and the short answer it that the book Façade was the culprit because I had it in my reading plan. They just did an update of that book, so something went wrong with the update syncing with my reading plan. So it was a process of finding it in the log file; deleting the book from resources; deleting that reading plan; updating the resources to bring the book back.

Logos tech support was very efficient and helpful, even though this was a new issue for him.

BTW, the tech support told me that Logos just sent an update of the iPhone/iPad app to Apple for approval that will "fix" the reading plan syncing issues. It should be available this week. I am very expectant and hopeful that it works.

Dale, I read your posts and I am running the same releases/updates and having the same issues. I get nothing but a gray screen with a search box, three icons and menus that either don't work or don't even have the usual information within them. Because I have invested so heavily in Logos, I pray that they resolve this issue asap!

Terry, I feel your pain! It has been a week since the Logos 4.5a (4.51.0.2048) upgrade, so if you are still experiencing issues, I would call Logos tech support. They helped me get up and running. My problem was due to a conflict with one of my books in the reading plan (because the new upgrade made some changes with the reading plan). So the tech support person can read your diagnostic loggins and see what particular book is hanging things up. It needs to be removed from resources and then it will automatically be added again next time your resources are updated.

This kind of problem pretty much requires a look at your diagnostic log files. Mac tech support can help you interpret them for you and find what's causing the problem.

Hope you get it working soon.
