Memory or Processor?

Hi,

The desktop pc that I am running L4 on is a core2quad @ 2.4ghz with 4gb of memory installed, being 32 bit version of windows it can only use 3gb of that memory. It runs well enough.

I recently got a new laptop that is an HP Pavillion DV7 on an i7 processor running 64 bit windows with 8gb of ram. L4 seems to run much faster and smoother on the laptop than the desktop. I am actually considering hooking the laptop up to dual monitors at my desk in my study, instead of the desktop PC, because L4 runs better on it.

My question really is, does anyone know if it is the difference in the memory or the processor that is making the laptop run L4 better? You see, my desktop PC could support 64 bit windows, so I could potentially get the desktop to have 8gb or more of useable memory. The main thing that is holding me back from transferring all my Logos use over to the laptop is that I would eventually want to go above 2 monitors for my study, and to do this on the laptop would mean using USB graphics adapters, and I`m not sure if they are a good option.

I appreciate any opinions or advice.

Found a chart comparing CPU's => http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html that shows Intel i7's tend to be much faster than Core 2 Quad (even with lower clock speed).

One configuration idea is placing laptop beside desktop with Logos 4 on both systems. Open resources primarily for reading using slower desktop; have option to edit notes and clippings on either platform, then sync to the other. Likewise have other options to sync stuff between computers.

If want to upgrade desktop to 64 bit Windows; suggest clean install.

The difference could be due to the newer generation i7 processor, however the HP DV7 is a 4 yr old machine with Core2 Duo, so would appreciate a more accurate description of your laptop processor.

Like I said, I could upgrade to 64Bit windows as the hardware supports it, that would give me a maximum of 8GB Ram on the desktop.

Laptop could be upgraded to 16Gb Ram in the future if it became necessary.

Interestingly, I just sat both machines together and clicked to launch Logos 4 at the same time on each. The desktop took 1 min 36 sec approx longer than the laptop to launch to the home screen displayed, that's before we do anything really meaty.

As long as that was a first time startup it is meaningful. Otherwise repeat it after rebooting the computers.

The i7 definitely makes the difference. DDR3 is also a bit faster than DDR2 RAM.

Logos 4 is a GRAPHICS HOG - Logos 4 uses Graphics just like it was a high end video game - those USB graphics adapters might [have not tried it] slow it down to a crawl. [I am not positive but I think that Logos 4 is a 32 bit program - someone will back me up or correct me on that]

David, that might explain it. The laptop has a dedicated graphics board with 2gb of GDR5 memory, and is set to use up to another 1gb of the 8gb system ram as required. So the laptop has access to 3gb of graphics memory, 2gb being GDR5, the desktop on the other hand has 1gb of DDR3 graphics memory.

The laptop is running 64 bit windows, and runs L4 well, so I`m not sure if being 64 bit is any problem for Logos 4. So looks like I`d need to upgrade the graphics card in my desktop for it to run L4 as well as the laptop.

Does anyone think this would help, or is the processor and system ram also an issue in L4 performance on the desktop?

I agree that the desktop's main shortcoming seems to be its graphics capabilities.

However, the other main bottleneck for Logos is hard drive speed. Since it consults indexes too big to load into memory a 7200 RPM drive or SSD improves performance over 5400 rpm drives.

I have a similar situation in that my desktop has dual monitors but is slower than my laptop for Logos usage. It isn't burdensome, just noticeable. Now, here is the really interesting thing: I find that the extra few seconds between functions on the desktop provides me with a moment to reflect and absorb vs. the instant gratification of moving right into the next search, etc. In other words, I get more in-depth study done, more work achieved, more creativity manifested, more time for the Holy Spirit to reveal the Word to me... if I'm not cannon-balling right past what I've just read/searched/compared/etc. Of course, this is just my perception, and I'm sure that others here spend entire seconds quietly meditating before flipping the proverbial digital page. I, on the other hand, don't seem to have the requisite degree of discipline. Just a thought

My question is why not load the indexes in RAM for users that have it. I have a 4 core machine with 16 Gig RAM that I can expand easily to 128 gig of RAM.

I have an SSD, but why go to disk if you don't have to. A Data Base Program should be able to memory map key indexes.

Logos 4.5a on Mac is a 32 bit application with similar 2 GB memory constraint as Logos 4.5a on Windows.
