Hebrew Basics....

I consider myself to be getting dangerous when it comes to reading and translating Hebrew. I think I understand that I did a wrong step by going to the BHS with westminster.....as opposed to Anderson Forbes. I guess what my question is.....What is a good Hebrew Bible? Are they all the same, since it was originally written in Hebrew?

Can you help me understand the differences for the many Hebrew Bibles.

I have always heard of BHS and being a Good Hebrew Bible Does BHS have a AF morphology? Is AF better worse than Westminster.

I think I am lost as to what I can really focus on when i want to read the Hebrew.....Maybe you'll can help me understand all this....

P.S. looking for man of in Hebrew I thought the Lemma (Shoreresh) as they say at temple. was aleph nun Shin.......but it seemed there was a search for the lemma aleph nun vav shin......what's the difference.....Referring to that other thread can someone break in down into simplier terms..

BHS/WHM 4.2, BHS/WIVU and AFAT have different morphologies. Go to a Morph Search, select a Hebrew bible as the resource, and you will see the morphology in the last drop-down on the right (you can choose between Hebrew and Aramaic variants).

Is AF better worse than Westminster.

Type @ in the search box to see the parts-of-speech. The only parts-of-speech they have in common are noun, pronoun and verb but even they are analysed differently! BHS/WHM regards articles, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions as Particles. I will only say that BHS and AF morphologies serve a different purpose and you have to find one that best matches your world view[:)]

Edit: am also curious about Logos choosing Anderson-Forbes Hebrew/Aramaic Morphological tagging for Old Testament in English Reverse Interlinear Bibles.

Bit more puzzlement: right click in AFAT Genesis 13:13 has lemma: אנושׁ (aleph nun vav shin) then click HALOT, which opens to lemma אִישׁ (aleph yod shin). Yet can copy lemma from AFAT, then paste into HALOT location to change lemma entry to אנושׁ (aleph nun vav shin).

BHS with Westminster 4.2 is the correct choice in most cases. I genereally use AFAT only for certain distinct purposes such as for copying into an email where I don't want to be required to go through and delete the cantillation marks (many fonts lack these so the result then includes those lovely little squares). AFAT is also good if you want to check the critical understanding of sources in the Pentateuch. In cases where the BHS 4.2 and AFAT differ, I frequently find AFAT wanting.

I'd like to know this too. It seems like Westminster 4.2 Morph doesn't belong to a base package, why? It's better than AF morphology? How to compare? Both of them have as base text the BHS. [:O]

That depends on your purpose. I would generally prefer the Westminster morphology, but AFAT does have advantages in other areas such as distinguishing the threads from which the Pentateuch was composed and delineating text type. I can recall one instance where BHS had a glaring error while AFAT was correct, but that is unusual.

Not know why: BHS/WIVU is currently included in JG base packages (c) 2006. BHS/Richter license is included with Scholar's Silver and above, but has yet to ship.

Older ND base package included BHS/WHM 4.2 (c) 2004 and BHS/WTS 4.0 (c) 2003 while yet older RA base package included BHS/WTS 3.5 (c) 2001.
