Typo or Logos not working properly?

Hi,

I have just bought the SESB (Logos Edition) for the UBS4 apparatus. I have noticed something peculiar in textual the footnote for Romans 1:31 (footnote #6): [I have also noticed it in other textual footnotes in this book]

If i hover over the footnote, the symbol for Codex Sinaiticus appears, but the superscript (2 or *) does not. The same happens in the "Information" box when I select "Show Information.

However, when I click on the footnote and the call-out box appears, the superscripts appear, but symbol for Sinaiticus appears, but the superscripts don't!

I need both to show, all the time!

Is this a problem of formatting by the publishers of the SESB? Or is it a quirk of Logos?

I don't have SESB, but I wonder if this is a font problem. The popup on hovering uses the system font, but this changes to your default (English?) font when you click on the link. Try choosing the default fonts (Tools > Program settings) and see if that gives you more consistent results.

Ok, that could be it, because I have my default font set as GentiumAlt (because I do most of my work in Greek/English).

My default Hebrew font is SBL Hebrew. Would changing this make any difference?

Is there a better font I could be using for my default font?

The Gentium fonts are the standard for Greek and SBL Hebrew for Hebrew.

However, I wonder if your SESB apparatus notes are tagged as English, even though a Hebrew aleph is required to indicate Sinaiticus. This would then rely on your default Englsh font including the Hebrew alphabet as well.

Try setting Default Font to "Default" or "Default Sans Serif" (at the top of the list rather than aphabetical). You could also try setting Default Font to to a very distinctive display font, to see which characters in your notes are affected by this change and which are not.

The other thing that can help if your default font doesn't display a character properly is to right-click on the word or character. It will then appear in the right-click menu in the default sans-serif font. (My default font copes with most things, but this tip helps with the occasional tranliterations that it can't display properly.)

Well, my problem is still not resolved. Here is what I have discovered so far:

With my Default Font set to Default:

On Hover I see the Aleph, but no superscripts

On click I see both the Aleph and the superscripts after it.

When brought up in Information I see the Aleph but no superscripts.

With my Default Font set to SBL Greek:

On Hover I see the Aleph but no superscripts

On click I see a question mark in a box instead of the Aleph, but i do see the superscripts

In Information I see the Aleph with no superscripts.

So could it be a problem with the formatting of the resource?

We really need someone who has SESB to check this for you.

The behaviour that you describe with the Default font is probably the expected: you get all of the information when you click on the link. You certainly need to ensure that your default font is an English font but with a fairly broad range of characters, including Greek and Hebrew. SBL Greek isn't the right choice for the default.

I realise SBL Greek is not a good choice for the default font, but i was just trying it to see what it did. Do you have any other suggestions for an alternative default English font?

I like Garamond and use Adobe Garamond Pro. I got this with some Adobe software, but there are cheaper or even free versions around.

Otherwise, the new fonts that came with Windows Vista have good character sets and are readable: Calibri ad various others beginning with C. Anything described as Unicode should cover the basic Greek and Hebrew character sets.

If you have Word, use Insert > Symbol to see what characters each font contains. alternatively use Windows character map.

I've not noticed this before, but you're right (although on my system I get the superscript asterisk, but not the superscript letters numbers). I don't know whether that's resource problem or a bug.

I think there's a typo here. At least I can't make sense of what actually happens, sorry!

I think the resource I have (from SESB 2.0) is different from the one secateurs has, but it doesn't give superscript numbers in the hover pop-up:

I am able to reproduce the missing superscript in the footnotes and will report it to Development.

As a workaround, if you click on the footnote indicator in the text it will make the popup static, and the superscript characters do appear in that view.

Yes, i already realised that clicking on the footnote can fixt the problem. But it is a bit annoying, and it also depends on what fonts are set whether even that works. For example, with GentiumAlt set as the default English font, upon clicking the footnote, the superscripts do appear, but not the Aleph (which is just as bad)!
