The zip file for the Brill font package will not open. I get a message that says the file is invalid.
Are you using Firefox as a browser? Try right-clicking (Control-click on Macs) on the links to the font files and then use the save as function. This should help, but let me know if you find otherwise.
Hope you enjoy the font!
Okie dokie, Judy and Brill .... you got me. Why is the Brill font so good? And if so where do you get it?
Don't know anything about it but here's the link Logos put in their release notes http://www.brill.nl/news/brill-typeface
Thank you Kevin. I went to the site; the idea is very interesting (copied from ref'd page above and bolded by me):
"After careful consideration, Brill has taken the initiative of designing a typeface. Named “the Brill”, it presents complete coverage of the Latin script with the full range of diacritics and linguistics (IPA) characters used to display any language from any period correctly, and Greek and Cyrillic are also covered. There are over 5,100 characters in all. This indispensable tool for scholars will become freely available later this year for non-commercial use. You will be able to download the font package after agreeing to the End User License Agreement. “The Brill” is available in roman, italic, bold, and bold italic, with all necessary punctuation marks and a wide assortment of symbols. It will be especially welcomed by humanities scholars quoting from texts in any language, ancient or modern. “The Brill” complies with all international standards, including Unicode. John Hudson of Tiro Typeworks, well-known for his multilingual fonts, is the Brill’s designer. "
Why is the Brill font so good?
The best thing about it is that because it contains so many characters, you don't have to keep font-switching if you're writing in multiple languages. That said, it doesn't work well in applications that don't provide full OpenType support (see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/44996.aspx) , so I'm personally sticking with Gentium.
I'm not using Firefox. I have Vista Ultimate and use IE 8. Please advise.
I'm not using Firefox.
I think that "Brill" was advising you to use Firefox.
(welcome to the forums, by the way).[:)]
Actually Alabama, might be just the opposite.
This was the warning on the Brill site: 'Currently the Brill server is experiencing a difficulty in displaying either .zip or .otf files in Firefox. If you are using Firefox - Right-click (Control-click on Macs) on the links to the font files and Save Link As. This will ensure a clean download.'
In IE8 (or 9) one would right-click over the file (after agreeing to the eua) and then selecting 'save to' to select a location on the PC. The zip file isn't self executing; it has the fonts, pdf guide, etc. So the fonts need to be then copied to the font directory unless Brill has alternative instructions (there's none in the zip file).
Thanks for the welcome, Alabama!
DMB, I believe I used your suggestion the 2nd time I downloaded the file, but I will try again.
Followup on my last post. . . it still doesn't work. I'll try again sometime. I use mostly Logos 3, anyway.
Hi JudyN,
Sincere apologies for the late response! We found that versions IE earlier than version 9 have this problem. (The problems do not occur in version 9, at least with Windows 7.) If you update your browser, or try using a different browser, that should resolve the issue.
Please feel free to contact me at marketing@brill.nl for further support, or simply respond to this thread.
