Combine Highlighting and Clippings

Highlighting and Clippings have many things in common, including

They maintain a reference to a specific location in a specific resource
They allow notes to be made pertaining to that reference

but they differ (unnescesarily?)

Highlights cannot be tagged (almost everything else can be)
Clippings have no visual residual in the original resource.

However, if you think of clippings as being a highlight with no visual effects, and you were to add tags to highlights (please?) then would there be any significant difference between them? other than the way they display and print?

I would like to sometimes view my highlights notes file like a clipping ... it just seems clearer, and sometimes I would like to see my clippings in a more condensed summary form (like the highlights in a notes file)
I would like to sometimes click on a highlighted reference and see details about the resource (like the i in notes),
I would like to tag and search my highlighted text for those tags (please again?)

... Just thinkin' aloud.

This is where I think LOGOS is reinventing the wheel, while they should instead research the market (what people need and want) and market players (what other competitors are doing to meet the customer need).

Why do we need umpteen types of notes in Logos4 (notes, clippings, highlights, sentence diagrams, etc.)? they are ALL notes! I suspect, they are almost alike under the hood as far as the data they capture and their structure. Unnecessary classes create unneeded complexity for the end user.

in PDF, Kindle, Mobipocket, and other ebook formats, highlights, clippings and notes are treated the same and are saved in one file per book. In other words, notes are tied to their resource, and I think this is how it should be by default. No asking the user what he wants to name the file, type of file, searching to open the right file when he wants to add his content. Notes should be opened the moment the corresponding resource is opened.

If there is a lag or performance drop because of the amount of resources opened, then either LOGOS needs to re-think their program infrastructure (is it about time to abolish failed WPF?) or user needs to stop opening so many resources at once. I can't think of a really good reason to have more than 4 resources opened at one time, most of time 2 resources would work beautifully. With times to open a resource approaching milliseconds, what is the reason to having them displayed and consuming resources needlessly, when they could simply be re-launched when needed? This would give way to a system when one resource would replace another, instead of being added to another tab.

I totally agree Martin, but I would like to see it implemented a slightly different way.

I would like notes files revamped to do everything, and it seems like everything under the hood is already there. I think there should be an indented field in notes called "quotation field" that clips the full highlighted text into that area, highlights it (as it already does) and gives it a short title (as it already does). Tags would also need to be added.

This would provide the best of all possible words for me.
