I've updated to 4.5a and the sync icon is missing that is usually there on the top right hand corner. Is this by design?

I think that I have seen this before, but no, it is not by design. Have you restarted your computer?
I have not restarted. It is indexing so I didn't want to disturb that process. When I initiate a sync now, the icon appears for a moment and then disappears. I will restart it after the indexing is finished and report back.
I think once you restart, it will be back to normal. Let us know otherwise. [:)]
