Yes, he really was all that. With a little effort on your part, you can listen or even read a free ebook of his at http://vancehavner.com/ ... then come back and tell us whether all that measured up to your definition of all that, eh? [;)]
Oh, and by the way, a quick Basic search of all text in my Platinum+ library reveals 218 results when searching for citations re: Vance Havner. Within evangelical circles, Dr. Havner was, and continues to be, well respected and a delight to read/listen to.
I am constantly amazed at the down to earth quotes Vance Havner used. I find myself quoting him more and more, a few quotes:
Multitudes throng the Lord at church on Sunday. How many really touch Him?
Preaching the truth makes people either sad, mad, or glad. Too many people today leave the church on Sunday neither sad, mad, nor glad; they go out as they came in. Better go out mad than just go out!
The tragedy of today is that the situation is desperate but the saints are not.
When a man joins a church, we should not flatter him—we should challenge him. He ought to know what it means to be a Christian; that it cost God his Son and the Son His life. When we cheapen it to make it acceptable to this age, we insult God.
A preacher should have the mind of a scholar, the heart of a child, and the hide of a rhinoceros. The problem is how to toughen his hide without hardening his heart.
My Pastor told me about him and simply put, he has blessed my ministry and challenged my walk w/ Christ. You can listen to numerous sermons from him online. Steadying the Ark is the first sermon I ever listened to from him. CLASSIC!!!
