ב (in) and אתה (thee) contraction

Lexham Hebrew Interlinear (LHI) explains that בך is a contraction of ב (in) and אתה (thee). We see the same idea in בכה. This translation of בך is supported by numerous others, including Young, Miller, and others. See Dead See Scrolls 1QIsa-a, Masoretic text, etc. Isaiah 26:3. Can someone help me understand this. It seems that it is so basic but I cannot find an explanation. Please feel free to refer me to a Lexicon or Grammar, as I have quite a few. Best, Gregorio

In your grammars, take a look at the chapter(s) on pronominal suffixes. The forms that the pronouns take when appended as suffixes to other words are different than their stand-alone spellings (which is the form most lexicons use, and the form most databases will tag the text with). (Likewise, the spellings of pronominal suffixes can be different when appended to verbs versus other words.)

Vincent, wow, thanks so much for the information on the pronominal suffix. I spent a couple of hours looking at this. I found lots more examples of how בך is translated in thee. I have three requests: (1) which of the grammars is the most basic in its explanation of the pronominal suffix; (2) is there a specific example of where either בך or בכה is mentioned in the context of the pronominal suffix; and (3) is there a table of some of the most common or basic pronominal suffixes? Vincent, your information was invaluable! Thanks to you, I found the tables I was looking for and the information in Kelley’s Biblical Hebrew (pp. 68-75 and 153-159). Really? Pronominal suffixes are so basic that my introductory book deals with them in the 4th chapter. That means we probably did them in the late first or early second week!
