Bibliography for research paper

In Logos 3, it was possible to generate a Bibliography for all open resources which could be copied to a research paper. Has anyone figured out if there is a way to do this in Logos 4. I haven't yet found a way, and I am very disappointed because I used about 40 works, and it will take a long time for me to insert each one individually.

Mark, I'm wondering the same thing. This is a very important feature that I hope is just hidden somewhere we haven't found it yet. There is a setting to select which output format but I can't find the way to create the bibliography. I use Zotero for everything like this but you have to be able to get the data out of Logos first.

I think it is something coming out in an upcoming release if I remember right. You'd have to check the "What's Missing" page. I can't find a link to it at the moment. I am sure someone will post it for us soon.

While this isn't a perfect solution, far from it really, since you continue to have full 3.0 functionality and (from what I've heard) you get the new books that come with 4.0 even in your 3.0 library, you could reopen all those resources in 3.0 and copy the bibliography info from there. Like I said, not very "friendly".

Actually, now that I think about it. You could just copy & paste some text from 4.0 to Word or something and the reference should come with it still. Copy something from each of your sources, reformat the reference and there you go.

Slight correction. You get most of the new books that come with 4 in your 3 library. Some of the books simply will not work in L3 because they require the capabilities of L4. And yet still, some books made for L4 are in need of being recompiled for L3.

Be assured they're working on it.

In L3 I would often create a collection for a paper that I was working on. I would then generate a bibliography for that collection to copy into my paper. Is that possible in L4?

This is quite useful for research papers and bibliographies. When you do the bibliography for v4, could you please make it export as described in the blog?

Clippings would be good, but I don't work that way any more (with note cards) that is essentially what clippings is. IF that is how Biblio's were generated, then I could change my habits.

I would also like a biblio to be generated from collection files. That matches my usage in L3. If I were working on an article, I would add each resource to a collection and then create a Biblio from it.

And please. Can we set this so that it somehow exports well with programs like Zotero, Notabene and biblio?

I would also like a biblio to be generated from collection files. That matches my usage in L3. If I were working on an article, I would add each resource to a collection and then create a Biblio from it.

Actually that brings to mind tags. Bibliographies generated by a specific tag would be great.

Generating from a collection would be ideal for me, particularly if we could create a collection based on resource add date. For me, I have my Logos works in Zotero - as of now, exported from 3, so lots of the Logos 4 stuff is missing.

If I could create a collection of "all resources between ___ and ___" and export in BibTex or another format compatible with Zotero, then I would have all the books I'd added since a given point. That would be most helpful. Otherwise I have to export all resources, import to Zotero, retag, etc.

While I like the Clippings idea I think that the Logos 3 entire Library method should be here as well. Logos 4 is an upgrade and a good one at that, but any upgrade should allow you to keep what you had and add more not take options away. While this may be one of the more minor details I still see great value in have the bibliography for an entire library and hope to see it added to Logos 4 soon.

In Logos 3, I use the "Titles and Location" bibliography of my entire library and the
"Account Summary" report to manage my library. I keep updated pdf
copies of both and would love to have this option in Logos 4.

FWIW:

I have heard rumors that in days past, they used to do this sort of Bibliography thing using a machine that would, after an appropriate key was depressed, place a single character onto a sheet of paper. Then, they would press the next key, and another character would be printed, and so forth. If an error was made, they would have to stop and try to erase the errant character by rubbing over it with some sort of a gum-based, rubber product. As I understand it, this usually resulted in a rather unseemly smear or torn paper - and they would have to start all over again with a fresh sheet of paper. Keeping the characters aligned to each other and with the paper was also a challenge. I have also heard that if they needed more than one copy of anything, they would sandwich layers of blackened tissue between multiple layers of paper such that the impact of the machine would transfer each character onto each subsequent sheet - the last sheet being nearly illegible.

How did they manage to produce anything!? Truly, there were giants in the land in those days...

Given that Logos4 treats multi-volume titles as a single resource for purposes of the "resource count" of the Library (according to this: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/4698/37220.aspx#37220), I wanted to make sure, if possible, that the bibliography tool in Logos 4 will be able to export all books as individual items? In other words, I could export a single volume of some 3-volume work, or my entire library, and then easily cite an individual volume. Thanks!

I am working with students who are conducting research at a seminary university. We are using EndNotes to collect bibliographic citations for the research resources. It would be very helpful if we could export the citations from Logos directly into EndNotes. If you go to some of the top online research databases, they have that function.

Back in the day - we took notes on lined 3X5 cards - wrote by hand with cartridge ink pens that could actually leak ink. We had to actually open a hard cover and find the first paper page or two from which we had to manually copy title, author, publisher, publication cite and date ... we actually had to put our finger in a cutout circle and move a dial clockwise to make phone calls through devices attached to the wall or setting on a counter. Computers had to be fed a daily ration of paper cards with holes punched in the correct location - otherwise they got indigestion ... teachers were all ancient, the wind was always in our face, we walked uphill both ways, the Bible was still in Greek, the ark had not shown signs of rot, the gates to Eden were a major tourist attraction ...

Okay, I do exaggerate but bibliographies are more easily created manually than some of the other missing L4 functions ... just grit your teeth and share the pain[:D][6]

I've had even disposable ball-point ink pens leak on me on flights. Particularly vulnerable are Stabilo pens, which is a shame because I really like them otherwise. They write so smoothly and the fluid ink dries immediately which is a must for me as a lefty. Yes, I don't write longhand very often anymore, but I still need a pen to do Sudoku or crossword puzzles in the in-flight magazine or or to fill out those stupid customs forms when flying back and forth between the US and Canada. More than once I've left big black splotches all over the seat back tray.

But never mind this, anyone remember the revolutionary electric typewriter such as the IBM Selectric?

I remember when we had 5-digit phone numbers in my town. And in a neighboring smaller town there was still a phone operator. If you called someone up, you went through her. And God forbid you should drop your computer program on the floor. All the cards would scatter all over the place and you'd have a tough time of it getting the lines of code back in the right order. I think that's why Fortran line numbering was invented.

Ha ha! I remember when I was in high school, taking the 45-minute drive up to the closest university that taught computer classes, because all my high school offered was BASIC and I'd outgrown that. I took their Fortran class, and we used punched cards. We used to have to submit our deck of cards one day to be processed by the operator and come back the next day to pick up the results. Since I lived 45 minutes away that meant I had to get my programs right the first time because I could only pick up the printouts from my runs the next time I was back for class. I got really good at hand-simulating!

The first phone "number" I remember was 2 longs and a short i.e. you had to time and count the rings. Then the farmers arranged to put up the poles if the phone company provided them. We moved to dial phones with 8 party lines - your conversarion was cut off at three minutes. Then we moved to the last location in the US to "upgrade" to strictly "ask the operator" - the 2 longs and a short you could directly call people on the same line.

And yes, I went to college with a brand new IBM selectic.

Ah the Selectric. I learned to type on one. Despised my typing teacher. If she could see me scramble letters now at 80WPM she'd still shake her head.

Ah yes I remember it well. I ran a BBS on my computer called "Midnight Run" it was only up overnight since we needed the phoneline during the day, I started it with a 300 Baud modem, and a few months later bought a shiny new 1200. Holy cow when the 2400 modems came out I thought I was in heaven!

While that appears to give away my age, remember that I grew up in a very rural area.

I just think when you pay for an upgrade, it should be an upgrade. An upgrade should not equal a loss in function. I am disappointed that this feature was not included in the original release of 4.0. When the upgrade is less the previous version, there is a problem. Not sure what the logic is there. I am very aggravated by this omission.

Yes, well there has been much discussion about all that since this thread was last active, but at least I can tell you that the next release (4.0b) can generate a bibliography to a text file. Hopefully it will see release in the next couple weeks (a Logos employee has indicated that it should).

The bibliography can be currently be exported from a existing collection or a clippings document (i.e., "open resources" isn't an currently an option).

As to when it will be released, only Logos can say for sure.
