PC is 3 times faster than Mac . . . a reality check

First, to Bob and all the staff, thank you for an incredible product. Second, I was doing Bible study outside of LOGOS and came across a quote from Diodore of Tarsus. Being curious I went to Logos to see what I had from this person. A search for "Diodore of Tarsus" on my Mac took 2.39 seconds and returned 133 results. Next I searched for "Diodore of Tarsus" AND "The voices of visible creation" to see if I had the quote in question. I did and the search took .88 seconds. Curiosity expanded and I did the same searches on my PC. Times were .84 seconds and .27 seconds respectively.

My points are:

1. yes the Mac still needs to catch up (Mac's should be 3 times faster than a pc, not slower Zip it! )

2. 2.39 seconds only seems like a long time, it really isn't if you consider the search was looking through 2624 resources

3. I appreciate the product that Bob and company have put out for various platforms, and just want to say "thank you," and "keep up the great work."

I don't have hard numbers, but my experience is that the Mac version works much better for me. I have a three year old MacBook Pro and a 6 month old PC with Win7, and for some reason my experience with Logos on Windows is not as nice. I probably have some hardware bottleneck on the PC even though it's newer (or some poor configuration), but I haven't spent any time trying to improve my experience on either--I just take what's given to me.

The Mac interface is more elegant and overall Macs are more stable. I never shut mine down except when I have a power outage and the UPS is beeping away or when I keep getting nagged to death about having to do another update that requires a reboot. I still haven't done the last Lion update.

As far as being faster goes, I find my iMac that was new last summer to be a huge improvement over the 2.4 dual core I was using. Then again, this is a 2.7 quad core I5....with 12 gigs of ram. The really funny part is that I am constantly running out of memory. PC or Mac, all 64 bit systems are memory HOGS. I would be curious to know how much ram you have in the Mac that is going at one third speed. Also, how many cores does the processor have? Macs eat memory, they always have. Feed me, Seymour, FEED ME! :-)

One thing I do wish the development team to do is a linux version. There is no reason that they can't just tweak the Mac version a bit and make it work as the underpinnings of Mac is BSD. It would take a bit of doing but it wouldn't be an entire rewrite. I think they should perhaps take it one step further. Logosbuntu! The Logos version of Ubuntu. Package Logos up with Ubuntu and add tools that would help with research and Bible study. Things like a prayer journal, K-Basket for structuring study notes....and then add some Christian theme art and a cool mac-like dock... Ooops... nerd alert... I did it again. :-)

Months ago, Logos 4 indexing on Mac and PC had similar times on similar hardware. Currently, Mac indexing is slow => Logos 4.5 Beta 12 Library Indexing Speed Regression - Mac is Slow

Launching Logos 4.5b Beta 4 on PC to Home takes 30 seconds while Mac takes 20 seconds.

A search for "Diodore of Tarsus" on my Mac took 2.39 seconds and returned 133 results.

Search All Text in Entire Library for "Diodore of Tarsus" took 0.85 sec on PC while Mac took 0.65 sec for 61 results in my library.

Next I searched for "Diodore of Tarsus" AND "The voices of visible creation" to see if I had the quote in question.

Searching my library found 0 results, which took 6.85 sec on PC and 16.84 sec on Mac (noted sync arrows spin for a bit on both computers).

Searching All Text in Entire Library for Yeshua took 0.36 sec on PC while Mac took 0.51 sec for 8,637 results in 1,789 articles on both computers.

While several Logos users have requested an open source version of Logos, desktop/laptop usage currently does not justify development business expense.

Noticed open source desktop usage is rising => http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74186.html that links to web page => http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=9&qpcustomb=0 that shows desktop usage trends: Mac % went from 5.67 % in Apr 2011 to 6.92 % in Feb 2012 while Linux went from 0.99 % in Apr 2011 to 1.16 % in Feb 2012 while Windows went from 93.34 % in Apr 2011 to 91.92 % in Feb 2012. Apologies: Mac desktop growth of 1.25 % from Apr 2011 to Feb 2012 is greater than Linux desktop usage of 1.16 % (personally a bit puzzled by Linux drop from 1.41 % in Dec 2011 to 1.16 % in Feb 2012).
