It has been years since this happened, and I cannot remember the names, subjects, etc.

I was very young in the faith. I heard a sermon on the radio while sitting in traffic on a S.F. Bay toll bridge. I scurried for paper to jot down some notes (long lost) and wrestled with issues the sermon raised for a few days. It was at the time the best sermon I ever heard.

I traveled the next weekend, so I visited a small church near the relatives house I stayed at. I heard what certainly sounded like the same sermon I had heard on the radio earlier in the week. The words were mostly the same, but the sermon was not the same at all. Obviously the preacher practiced plagiarism that Sunday. Never went back there, of course.

Plagiarism makes for the worst sermons in my opinion, hands down.

This is not a sermon, but a well thought-out reminder of the vital importance of proclaiming the truth of the Gospel in your preaching.

Preach on every doctrine that centers the attention on man rather than Jesus. Teach every doctrine that makes man the center of God's attention rather than God the center of man's devotion. Tell people only what God will do for them.

Avoid preaching about the necessity of a radical change of heart, through the truth revealed to the heart by the agency of the Holy Spirit.

Let your supreme motive to be popular with all people, then, of course, your preaching will be suited for that purpose, and not to convert souls to Christ.

Avoid preaching doctrines that are offensive to the carnal mind, so that no one should say to you, as they did of Christ, "This is a hard saying, who can hear it?"

Make no distinct points, and do not disturb the consciences of your hearers so that they may become truly alarmed about their souls.

Avoid all illustrations, repetitions, and expressive sentences that may compel people to remember what you say.

Avoid all heat and enthusiasm in your delivery, so that you never make the impression that you really believe what you say.

Make appeals to the emotions, and not the conscience, of your hearers.

Be careful not to testify from your own personal experience of the power of the gospel, so that you never should produce the conviction upon your hearers that you have something which they need.

Do not stir up uncomfortable memories by reminding your hearers of their past sins.

Denounce sin in a general way, but make no reference to the specific sins of your present audience.

Do not make the impression that God commands your listeners here and now to obey the truth. Do not let them think that you expect them to commit themselves right on the spot to give their hearts to God.

Give the impression that they are expected to go away in their sins, and to consider the matter at later time of their convenience.

Preach salvation by grace; but ignore the condemned and lost condition of the sinner so that he never should understand what you mean by grace, and know his need of it.

Preach the gospel as a remedy or a cure, but conceal or ignore the fatal disease of the sinner.

Do not speak of the spirituality of God's holy law (by which comes the knowledge of sin), so that the sinner never should see his lost condition and repent.

Make no appeals to the fears of sinners; but give them the impression that they have no reason to fear.

Preach Christ as an infinitely friendly and good-natured being. Ignore those scathing rebukes of sinners and hypocrites which so often made His hearers tremble.

Do not rebuke the worldly tendencies of the church, so that you should never hurt their feelings, and finally convert some of them.

Admit, either obviously or casually, that all men have some moral goodness in them; so that sinners should never understand that they need a radical change of heart, from sin to holiness.

Say so little of hell that your people will think that you do not believe in its existence yourself.

Make the impression that, if God is as good as you are, He could not send anyone to hell.

Make no disagreeable reference to the teachings of self-denial, cross-bearing, and crucifixion to the world, so that you should never convict and convert some of your church members.

Do not rebuke extravagance in dress, so that you should never make an uncomfortable impression on your vain and worldly church members.

Encourage lots of church socials, and attend them yourself.

Aim to make your hearers pleased with themselves and pleased with you, and be careful especially not to wound the feelings of anyone.

Make sure you avoid preaching to those who are present. Preach about sinners, but not to them. Say "they," and not "you," so that anyone should never take your subject personally, and apply it to their own life, Securing the salvation of their soul.

Preach that the new birth is something God deposits in people, not a fundamental change in the ultimate purpose of our lives.

Never tell people that they must cease from serving self and serve God and do His will.

Never tell them that repentance is man's ability and responsibility to turn from his sin to God! Teach them to delay turning away from all known sin toward God.

Preach predestination in such away that results in fatalism and apathy on the part of all people. Make each person believe that God has already determined who shall be saved, and nothing can change His will. You never want anyone to think that their actions can make any difference.

Preach that man is totally unable to obey God. Teach him that no one can turn to God, but he must wait upon God to turn (change) him. Make sure that no one realizes his true responsibility requiring him to repent in order to be saved. You never want anyone to know that man can turn from sin to God but the real problem is that he will not!

Preach that every one is born a sinner and a criminal. Teach that every baby is born guilty before God. You never want anyone to consider the fact that man is born morally innocent. You do not want anyone to know that he becomes a sinner because, in his rebellion, he has refused to love God with all his heart according to the light and has selfishly sought his own happiness above all else.

Preach that a person can be saved without making Jesus his lord.

Teach that holiness is just an option and not a requirement of the gospel. Teach them that they can be Christian without becoming true disciples.

Preach eternal security in such away that requires no perseverance in faith or continuance in holiness on the part of the believer. Make every person think he has his ticket to heaven that is all paid for so that he will always safely scoff at all calls for repentance and righteous.

Teach Christians that sin is a normal and natural part of their every day life and that they can never truly expect to ever overcome sin through the power of Christ.

Preach that no Christian needs to do anything. Teach them that they are safe and heaven bound even if their lives are disobedient and rebellious.

It's sad to see someone preaching like this and yet not afraid to accuse the 'bunch of preachers out there' for not pissing like a male! By the way, he uses the words piss and male ten times more than Jesus or redemption! I think this man still needs to express himself about his frustration, that's all.

About C. Finney, he's an anointed preacher I believe, but concerning his "Systematic Theology" there are some things I do not totally agree. He is in line with the Pelagius teaching about the Moral Law. He thinks that man still has the ability of converting by his own will. Which I think is not right.

I know giving sermons has to be discussed/taught. So I'm not questioning that per se. But I notice in the early NT and even post-NT writings, there's a curious emphasis on not getting to worried about 'the words'. I suspect much of what in english is 'prophesying' was on-the-fly discussion. I've always wondered why they were comfortable with it, since in our culture, we're very exacting and quickly ready to nail the teacher.

I used to be critical of sermons but not anymore (getting older?). I learn more from watching the pastor than listening to him. Few of my fellow 'lay' listeners even remember much past an hour later. A few weeks back I visited a church where I really could not identify exactly what the sermon was even about (while listening carefully). But I thoroughly enjoyed it because of the pastor; his example was the lesson.

I watched Rosie’s post[a few x’s], and watched a few more from the Gentleman. This just seems to be his style of preaching. May be he needs a Logos Package, I dunno.

Looking at a quick study of the Major/Minor Prophets[preachers] in the Bible, they all seemed to have their own unique characteristics. Why bash this guy? I do agree that – according to our standards – he could work on his delivery, but I think that the point he was attempting[weakly] to make was that God was addressing ‘Men of Courage’…..just a thought.

I agree. Looking at the 6 passages, there seem to be those of some vigor and courage and to do such a thing would be a slight act of disdain and one of some rebellious attitude. Also, note that they are associated with the current ruler of the time.

He does need training, but I doubt he would accept it. From all I've seen/read/heard, he's just an arrogant blowhard who wants constant attention. If that means misusing the text, he'll do it. If it means fighting with various local authorities, he'll do it. If it means posting videos on Youtube and making outrageous statements, he'll do it.

He is in no way parallel to the prophets in the OT. They did strange things, but for specific reasons, and under God's specific direction. Not to gain attention and not ever by misusing God's words for their own benefit.

Back to the topic, one of the better sermons I've read recently was from the collection "Puritan Sermons 1659-1689 6 vols", the first one on Being Conscientious.

Worst - St. Gregory the Great (Hom. 25.1.10) - famously merges Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Lazarus and the sinner who also washed Jesus' feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. Result a non Biblical character that crops up frequently in sermons and famously features in Godspell and the DaVinci Code. Shows the impact when we get it wrong!

Best - anything by Robert Murray McCheyne to pick one try “What have I to do any more with idols?”—HOSEA 14:8. First read him years ago and was inspired by the power and accuracy of his style and the fact that the sermons for me transcended the barrier of time.

It would be hard to pick a best and a worst. I often forget the bad ones and remember the good ones. Also, as I haven't read many sermons in Logos, so my links will be to external sources.

But if you don't already have it, you may want to pick up the Preaching Collection: http://www.logos.com/product/4480/baker-preaching-collection. No doubt there will be examples of bad preaching in some of those volumes. I've only used one of the books, Christ-Centered Preaching by Chapell (and it explains things to avoid while preaching). I have to say that Chapell is The Man (in a good sense, not in a David sense) when it comes to teaching expository preaching.

George, could I exhort you to read it again? I am sure much has changed in your life over the past 20 years since you read it, and hopefully that includes a deeper, fuller understanding of the gospel yourself.

God's action is based on and flows out of his love for his creation. To depict God as some ogre dangling man over the pit of hell is not the gospel.

I believe that the OP was asking us based on our OWN opinion. Is that not what George did..

Yes, George gave his opinion, but in such as a way as to start a fight, since he likes to be controversial. He basically said "If you agree with the sermon 'Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God', you're not a Christian." Rather, "you don't understand the gospel." His exact words. This is why these threads aren't a good idea because we're afraid to call out people for outrageous comments, e.g. George, and/or we're not supposed to, which is fine, it's Logos's sandbox. But you can't start a thread like this and expect to avoid fights because with the wide userbase Logos has, a "good" vs. a "bad" sermon is going to be pretty widely defined, and things quickly degenerate into who is and isn't a [good] Christian, vs. something like "how can I use Logos to locate examples of sermons." Maybe if the first post had been worded better, e.g. "Post a Logos Resource you found helpful or not helpful", it would work out better, or perhaps not.

The worst I am afraid to say was one of mine when I just started preaching, it was constructed out of a place of pain, and preached in a wrong spirit(a place of hurt, pain and loss), and I am embarrassed to say looking back there was very little grace(like none) in the message and how it never destroyed/damaged the church it was preached in is only down to the grace of God - it was one of those messages looking back on I wish I could undo/unsay if I could.

I chose not to preach for 3 years after that until some kind soul encouraged me to preach again

Best sermon I ever heard? A few years back during the Easter vigil. I still remember it:

It went something like this:

"Just before our celebration started, little Amy there gave me an Easter present. 5 jelly beans. She said:

"Here Father Mike. an Easter present:

White for His holiness

Blue for his resurrection

Green for the hope he gave us

Purple for his Kingship

Red for his sacrifice"

The best sermon is Edwards "Sinners in the hands of an angry God", the worst is one that I have sat through was where the Priest explained to us that if God judged people then we should refuse to worship him, I seem to recall that he quoted from Desmond Tutu to support this position.

I guess I've been blessed to hear pretty good sermons most of the time. [:)] I certainly can't think of any example off the top of my head that came close to the irrelevancy of that one to my own spiritual life, and the egregious misuse of Scripture.
