Who is voting for Lloyd-Jones, and why?

It seems like in all the posts about MarchMadness people are voting for N.T. Wright, but he's losing this round. Can I ask those who are voting for Lloyd-Jones what are your reasons why? Is it that you already own everything from Wright? Smile

From what I've read Lloyd-Jones isn't bad, but if I had to choose who's stuff to buy ... I guess I tend to go for scholars over pastors when it comes to theology books.

Seeing the free book of the month was his, those that didnt have it would like to get the rest , is my guess. I have no interest in N.T. Wright and Lloyd-Jones writings has been so much a blessing to me., Im willing to help others get it at a low price.[:D]

Is it so difficult to believe so many of us might simply, at least in this instance, actually prefer the writings of the late pastor, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones in lieu of NT Wright? Now, if the choice were between, say, DA Carson or John Owen and Dr. Lloyd-Jones, I'd opt for Carson or Owen. Those aren't my choices at the present. (Well, in retrospect, actually, since I already own both Carson and the works of Owen in Logos, it's a moot point, except by way of example.)

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off that way. I'm just genuinely surprised, I had barely heard of Lloyd-Jones before the free book of the month came out and I had no idea he was such a popular writer among the Logos crowd.

It certainly is difficult to believe. However great Lloyd Jones was, his appeal is principally to one theological tradition, howbeit one that is well represented in Logos. Wright on the other hand is an academic and theologian whose appeal is to a wide range of traditions, and who is one of the best known theologians of the age.

I guess this is me too. Also really surprised since I haven't seen anyone in the forums "rooting" him as much as I've seen for Wright.

The only thing I have to say "bad" about the free book of the month is a personal preference. I generally like books that started as books, not books that are transcribed sermons.

ha ha. I can't say I agree with Wright on everything (He sure has stirred things up on the topic of justification ), but he sure has made me think about the New Testament in ways I hadn't before.

I can't say I agree with Wright on everything (He sure has stirred things up on the topic of justification ), but he sure has made me think about the New Testament in ways I hadn't before.

I find a place in my library, reading, and studies for both, for different reasons. Both have positions I don't entirely agree with (Wright on Justification, Lloyd-Jones on a "second baptism in the Holy Spirit"), but I highly esteem and value both equally knowing I have to be the Berean and test what they write against the Word of Truth.

I voted for Wright, as I stated in another thread, solely because the Logos catalog has a far greater number of works by Wright that I want than Logos has works by Lloyd-Jones.

Logos has a very limited selection of the published works of Lloyd-Jones (sermons & lectures); most notably absent are the Friday night lectures from Paul's leteter to the Romans. On the other hand, there are very few, if any, of the published writings of N.T. Wright (excepting of course teh most recent publicaitons) that are not available in Logos. Those facts alone tipped my vote for Wright, hoping of course to get the 75% discount, over Lloyd-Jones; preference for the wirtings of one vs. the other never even entered the picture.

Exactly my view, but saying that I have more Wright than Lloyd-Jones in my collection anyway so this is a win-win for me anyway, I can vote with both a clear conscience and with an eye to maximinsing my savings.

Difficult to as it may be believe from your perspective, Lloyd-Jones was himself a literal genius, gaining multiple medical diplomas and related achievements while still in his teens and very early twenties. After laying aside his MD licenses along with his many scholastic and medical accolades he no doubt considered his ascension to the pulpit his highest calling.

It's like saying if my guy doesn't win, he lost because people cheated. I certainly hope that is not the case with the Logos voting crowd. While anything is possible conditions permitting, ironically the very people who may subscribe to Lloyd-Jones' "one theological tradition" should be the least inclined to pad results by voting multiple times and thus being dishonest.

You didn't come across "that way" at all. I have always been a voracious reader, both personally and academically, so I'm equally as surprised when someone is unfamiliar with an author I've read. It's an odd diametric, to be sure, but the Wright/Lloyd-Jones certainly offer most voters a clear-cut choice, I suppose.

If you've had Logos a while and been able to collect (afford, is a
better word, methinks!) a large collection of resources, voting choices may hinge more on one what already has in Logos than ones theological views. Or, of course, for others it comes down to theological and/or academic preferences or needs if one is still in school/seminary.

Don't be too quick to write off pastors. They are called to apply the theology they study in the everyday lives of people. Making great truths understandable and accessible to the person who is struggling with life can give them insight that goes beyond many an academic. I enjoy academics with a pastoral heart, but very much appreciate pastors who know and apply their theology.

I have like Lloyd-Jones for a number of years. I though I would like N T Wright as well, but when I heard him speak a number of years ago, I was disappointed. I am looking forward to reading more of Lloyd-Jones and will probably not be buying N T Wright, regardless of whether he wins or not.

Agreed. Plus, Lloyd-Jones helps me see application in ways I had not considered.
