Tether, MiFi, or Remote Access?

Greetings Everybody, I am a newbee around here and I been looking at some posts regarding remote access, I am trying to determine which option is best. I have an IPad2-Wi Fi only 64gig device, Scholars Silver LE Library base package. I purchased primarily for study on the go but discovered that I need internet connectivity to study the way I desire to. Any thoughts on what might work best in my situation. I am a bi-vocational minister who takes public transportation to work 3 to 4 days every workweek. Maximizing time while on public transport is important.

What are your thoughts on IPad apps that offer remote access to your PC, tethering, or just purchasing a mobile hot spot?

Unfortunately you have the question that is best (but not helpfully) answered 'I wouldn't start from here'.

In order to do detailed work with Logos you need the power of a laptop at least. Actually when I am on the bus I find that I cannot work to this level of concentration even with a laptop.

The iPad app is unlikely ever to be able to replicate the power of a computer.

My best advice would be to schedule the type of work you do when travelling - background reading - cross referencing - not taking etc and leave the things the the iPod doesn't do well to the office.

Hi Thornell.

In your post you refer to the need for online access to use the iPad app as you would like and you also refer to getting access to your PC.

i just wanted to clarify that these are different things (apologies if you already know that)

To use the full functionality of the iPad app (which as Mike points out is not as feature rich as the Logos 4 application) you need to be connected to the Internet, for which I would probably use a mobile phone based mobile hotspot solution.

For the iPad to get access to your PC, you would still need the mobile hotspot but, on top of this, you would need one of the remote access apps. These have been discussed in various threads in the forum but, since I don't have one, I cant comment.

Which solution do you think you are looking for?

I appreciate your response. I know my best solution is to invest in a super powerful, super light laptop; but that not in the budget right now. I do approach my study much in the manner that you suggested. Each morning and evening I have 40 minutes of relative quiet, no kids, no loud neighbors, no barking dogs, in other words prime time to study-on the bus. Being a morning person I often do the heavy lifting in the morning.

Thanks for your response, I appreciate your insight.

I know that tethering, and remote access are two different animals. To have remote access requires internet connections which I consider the utlimate solution if it truly and reliably works.

I am leaning more toward tethering because I already have a phone-with the ability to tether(Iphone 3gs-AT&T), MiFi requires that I carry another device and Remote Access to my home computer raises potential security issues in my mind although it may be perfectly safe. I have a MiFi device through Virgin Moble-(Verizon) that is pay as you go that I use when I travel to remote locations to minister. It works well but the data plan is restrictive and it is very expensive- almost as expensive as having another smart phone. I need a cheaper solution.

I have not tried tethering and wonder how well it works (even in remote locations) before I make a final decision.

I just tried to test the tether solution here (in UK so may not translate to where you are) but for some reason it's not working at the moment.

So, apologies, I can't provide any more detailed information at the moment
