downloading books for Kindle Fire or I-Pad

I am in the market for a tablet devise. The Kindle Fire is cheaper than the IPad. I only check my email and surf the net a little. I would like to be able to access my Logos library if I purchase a tablet.

I would like to know if I can download the library to the tablet. I am often in an area without internet connection and I don't want to pay for another service just for the tablet.

Will I be able to download individual books or commentaries to use anywhere?

Observation: minimum storage on an iPad is 16 GB (with ~ 14 GB available for apps and files) while a Kindle Fire has 8 GB.

Many Logos resources are available for offline mobile use, which includes iPad and Kindle Fire.

Ted - Yes books can be downloaded. I would highly recommend you give serious thought to the iPad. If cost is a concern, look into refurbished models from Apple. They are often just returned models and they come with the full standard warranty. You can purchase Applecare too if you want.

FYI - The iOS mobile app is further along in development, and I believe this will be the case for a while since:

The iPad is the best selling tablet
The Android market is fragmented, with each manufacturer installing a different version of the OS.

Notes & highlights are not currently available on the android version.

I have a Kindle Fire and like it. I have Logos installed and it works as a good eReader with a few other tools. Resources don't download automatically, so you can use it as is, with a good wi-fi connection. Or you can download resources to your Kindle for reading, if you want/need to do that (as in for airline travel-which I'm about to do). I also have Vyrso installed on the Kindle Fire (though it's not available in the Kindle app store). Vyrso is a good eReader and links with your Logos account automatically (once you sign in with your Logos ID).

The first thing I did when I got my iPad was download all the resources I could. There are some that won't download because of licensing restrictions, and there are some that won't download for some other reason (they're non-English texts, so my guess would be that the character formatting/encoding isn't supported on the iPad).

One thing I've noticed is that you must have an internet connection to do a search of your resources. So even if you've downloaded them all, on a mobile device, if you search while you're off the grid, it will return with 'no results'. Keep that in mind while you are making your decisions. If you happen to know what resource you want and/or where you want to go in that resource, then the mobile platform is dynamite even when you don't have a connection.

To me, if you are going to read on a device, the screen is really one of the most important issues. Is it a comfortable size? Does it create eye strain? You might consider going to a store and comparing them side by side. I recently did this with a friend who is considering both and there are considerable differences that you can only work out in regard to your preferences that way.

I just bought the new high res iPad. IMHO the new retina screen is WONDERFUL for reading. The screen on my Macbook Pro is no slouch, but yet when I have been on my iPad and go to my Macbook, there is a noticeable difference. I am looking forward to the retina quality coming to the MacBooks.

I did download my entire library onto my iPad. It works. My main disappointment is that the library window seems a bit less than optimal for huge libraries. It may be i just need to get used to it, or maybe there are some improvements in the works. I haven't fully investigated this yet. Sometimes the program seems a bit slow too... but this is subjective.

The other major thing you want to consider is memory. Keep in mind that some resources take up a lot of memory. Buy all that you can afford, particularly if you own more than one Bible Software product, want to put your other media (music, videos, etc) on there, etc. It adds up really quickly. It can be a pain to be constantly trying figure out your priorities, making tough decisions moving resources on and off.

I am extremely pleased with my iPad purchase. When I travel, I ride in the cheap and rowdy seats on airplanes rather than with the civilized folk up front. Pulling out a laptop is very difficult due to the space constraints. Yet with my iPad, I can read a magazine, commentary, a secular book (using Kindle or iBooks), newspaper, play a game, watch a movie, listen to some music, answer some emails (though I prefer a full size keyboard for extensive stuff), etc. etc. I know some consider it good enough to replace their laptop and while i am not there yet, I do have to say that it is very, very good.

And of course since this forum is about Bible Software... one of the HUGE blessings of an iPad is that if you have bought resources in Logos or other Bible Software products, you can read them like a book, marking them up for the next time you sit down at your laptop. This for me has been one of the missing parts of the equation of going completely digital on theology books. It's really good now and I expect with industry developments it is only going to get better.
