NIV

Hello. I have the free version of Logos4 and was considering buying the NIV, but I had a few questions:

1. Will the NIV have the greek look-up feature in Strongs?
2. Will the NIV be available on all my devices once I purchase it once?
3. Is there a way to get NIV84? The one I looked at seemed to be 2011.

Hi Josh,

1. If you just buy the NIV, then - to the best of my knowledge and based on my experience with a 1984 NIV - most probably not. The product page seems to advertise only the English language functionality. I know for certain it will not contain the full Reverse Interlinear - this (which enables full Greek morphology) is part of the http://www.logos.com/minimalcrossgrade and other base packages.

There are AFAIK two packages which still contain NIV 1984: the SESB full version (a rather scholarly resource with Aparatuses of various manuscript readings in the Hebrew and Greek originals of the bible and many bibles in European languages) and an Adventist Commentary package. Other than that (and even those may have changed recently or will change soon) Logos is no longer allowed to sell NIV 1984. Search for recent threads with NIV in the title.

Looking at Logos Base Package comparison => http://www.logos.com/comparison noticed NIV 2011 is included in Bible Study, Leader's, plus Scholar's and above (with Reverse Interlinear). Likewise noticed some lexicons included with many base packages. Original Languages and higher have more lexicons.

Thread => searching strong's numbers has a couple ideas for prioritizing lexicons for Logos 4 use. Several lexicons are indexed by Strong's numbers and Greek headwords: Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Greek, Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, The Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, & The Complete Word Study Dictionary, New Testament (some are included in base packages while others can be separately purchased).

Thread => The word grace and Strong's numbers includes:

Caution: English is not Greek. Proper names tend to have a one to one correspondence between languages to identify a person, place, or thing. Other words often have a different range of meaning. Greek has the verb ἀκούω (Strong's # 191) with meaning "I hear"; missing for this verb is a nuance with case usage. The verb ἀκούω with accusative case means hearing with understanding (e.g. Acts 9:4 ) while usage with genitive case means heard sound, but not understand (e.g. Acts 9:7 ).

Strong's numbering assigns one number for each Greek lemma (word). In contrast, Louw-Nida numbers are assigned based on contextual usage (semantic domain) so a Greek lemma can have more than one Louw-Nida number. Thread => Learning Greek includes a screen shot showing 10 Louw-Nida numbers for ἀκούω (Strong's # 191).

2. Will the NIV be available on all my devices once I purchase it once?

Yes, looking at NIV (2011) product page => New International Version (NIV) noticed mobile device icon.

3. Is there a way to get NIV84? The one I looked at seemed to be 2011.

Thread => Just Purchased Logos 4 and do not see NIV 1984 includes old product page link for NIV 1984 => http://www.logos.com/product/8786/new-international-version that shows "We're sorry! That is not a product we currently sell." with links to three products that include NIV 1984. However, while reading those product pages, noticed NIV 1984 Bible text is included, but reverse interlinear is not mentioned. One option is contacting Logos sales => http://www.logos.com/about/contact to inquire before purchasing. Other option is purchase, knowing have 30 days to return.
