Can't Install Logos 4

I'm using Windows XP SP3 on a PC with an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.40 GHz with 2 GB memory and plenty of disk space. I've been running Logos 3 with Gold library since it was released.

On my first attempt to install Logos 4 from a download, my operating system got so corrupted that I had to reformat the disk and do a clean install. On my second attempt form the CD the Winsock keys were damaged and I lost most Web browsing. On the third attempt I got a fatal error perhaps a minute or less into the install; removing Logos 4 with "Add/Remove Software" generated another fatal error, but everything seems to have been removed anyhow (it seems to have removed a lot of fonts from Logos 3 as well, but these were easily restored through Logos 3's "Tools | Libronix Update").

Logos's Tech Support have been very pleasant but unable to help. I am hardly a Windows expert, but am a fairly sophisticated user and have never experienced these kinds of problems installing software.

Can anyone suggest how I might figure out what's going on?

Those are some very bizarre things. Haven't seen a winsock error in probably 10 years. Almost forgot what it was.

When you say the system was corrupted requiring a reformat, I'm curious as to what that means.

Where did you get the install disc? Have you checked the disc visually and then tried to copy all of its contents into a folder on the drive and install from there?

Thanks to Mark and Kevin for their queries/suggestions. The disk was formatted a week ago with the clean install of XP, so disk problems should have been caught at that time. The Logos CD looks OK, but I copied to the hard disk and installed from there anyhow. It appears from Event Viewer that both the Prerequisites and Logos 4 were installed, and that the fatal error is triggered when indexing begins. Here are the error reports, the first during installation, the second when I subsequently tried to launch Logos 4.

I believe the “clr20r3” event type indicates an unhandled exception. I would have expected P9 to indicate the type of exception that was not handled, but they both look like garbage, and identical garbage at that. I’m not sure what to make of that. In any case, the CLR seems to be raising an exception that Logos isn’t handling in their code. I’ll talk to them again tomorrow to see if we can figure out what and why.

Not every hard disk or RAM error will be catched simply by a clean install. Sometimes there are intermitent errors hard to figure out.

Maybe some questions can give us a light about an action course:

1. I assume there were no problems BEFORE installing L4? While installing Windows did you received any unusual message?

2. There is some other change to your PC? Any software or hardware recently installed?

3. Is your antivirus working and up to date? (Certain winsock errors were a common virus sympthom)

4. Trend Micro USA offers a free tool to examine registry and memory processes, maybe you can use it: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Just download the utility, run it an post the result, I will examine it if you like.

Thanks for your help. As to your numbered points--

1. No problems before L4; no unusual messages installing XP.

2. No other hardware or software installed recently.

3. BitDefender is up to date, and runs a deep system scan every night (I am paranoid about viruses).

4. I ran hijackthis just to be sure, but it reported nothing unusual.

My suspicion at the moment is that Logos 4 requires some optional Windows software that I haven't installed. I only install what I use; every superfluous piece of Windows is a potential vulnerability. I will find out tomorrow if they expect something I haven't installed.

I am new here. It is very possible that if you haven't run windows update after the clean install there may be some needed files that aren't there for your install of Logos.

I know Logos 4 uses WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), I've read it has some vulnerabilities so some don't use it. Are you one of them?

I concur--I installed L4 on a client's XP machine (old) with no problems. But I always run ALL XP updates all the time on all machines. (I do scores every year.) Only by doing that have I avoided most of the "exception" faults. However, on such a machine I would also have run a full can chkdsk repair AFTER reformatting and before reinstalling XP.This sounds like indexing is trying to use bad sectors on a disk. Indexing is often run with less error checking DURING the process, due to the extreme slowness of the operation under the best circumstances.

1. I am up-to-date on .NET Frameworks, so WPF shouldn't be a problem.

2. Chkdsk shows zero disk problems.

3. I've done all updates except the optional ones. I think one or more of the optional ones are being presupposed by Logos, but I don't want to add a lot of junk that I don't need and won't use, so I'm waiting to hear from them about what optional features they might require.

4. Floyd, I didn't understand your comment about the Intel Quad CPU. Are there issues with it that I ought to know about?

Those are bizzare errors and I have two posibilities.

2. Bad RAM. This is IMHO the most likely. L4 will use all the RAM it can get I think. if you have some higher addresses that are bad, they can be supplying corrupted information on disk writes that are messing things up.

To check for Bad RAM please download and Burn and ISO for memtest86+ at http://www.memtest.org/

It's free, and it has saved me mega headaches on stuff like this. Once I discover Bad RAM I buy a fresh stick and swap out, problems gone.

No guarantees here but the program is free and it just sounds like it to me.

Do you have Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework with SP1 istalled on your PC... if not please try installing it and see if this helps. As far as your XP install, is this a 32 or 64 bit install of Windows XP? I know you said you have all updates installed but I assume you have SP3 installed for Windows XP? Do you have another MS OS you can install as a backup? Win 7 or Vista maybe?

I would reformat the drive, install XP fresh, install only antivirus and enable Windows Firewall and then update XP making sure you have all updated driver and .NET 3.5 installed. I would then disable antivirus and allow Logos 4 to install and index. See if this makes a difference. This way we rule out any other software conflicts. If you have a second hard drive you might want to do the install on it that way you do not have to get rid of all of your data in case it does not work.

You may get this information from tech support if you talk to them again, however, I wanted to post this information as well. Our developers have found that some errors with Winsock may be due to a bad installed "layered service provider" for Winsock (Microsoft Windows Sockets). You can use http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe to dump a list of all installed "Winsock Providers" (see attached screenshot). Any that are not published by Microsoft could have a bug that prevents Logos 4 from connecting to the Internet properly.

Try uninstalling the related product (likely to be anti-virus, firewall, or Internet control/security) to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, it is a bug in the other product that we have no way of working around in Logos 4. You would need to get an update from the other product's manufacturer that fixes the issue.

Currently, a program called CyberSitter is known to cause problems with Logos 4 in this manner.

If it is not a system folder, try updating to SR-6. To update, make sure no Logos 4 processes (Logos4.exe and Logos4Indexer.exe) are running in Task Manager, or reboot your system. Then download the current setup file from this link: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe.

If Program Files is a system folder on your E: drive (i.e., you are prompted for admin permission to save or delete files to the folder), you will need to uninstall Logos 4 from Control Panel and delete the Logos 4 folder. Then run the setup file above and install to either the default folder, or to a non-system folder.

Yeah happened to me too. Go to

C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Logos4\

and delete the installer(s).

Could you start a new thread in the Logos 4 for Mac Forum and give us a step by step scenario of your problem? Your frustrations are getting buried in other threads, and I do not yet have a clear understanding of what is happening. I know that Parallels is not the most simple application and that the manual is less than helpful, but it does work very well.

If you will start a new thread in the L4 for Mac Forum, you will find some very knowledgeable people who are more than willing to devote their time to helping you.
