Sync While Offline

I'm on a Mac.

I almost always keep Logos offline, that is, I keep it disconnected from the internet in Logos' settings. This speeds up the program a lot for me. However, I'd like the ability to force a sync even though my setting is for offline work. All I'm wanting to sync are my notes and highlights. Logos, could you add this?

I should also note that after studying offline, syncing won't function properly even when I turn on "use internet" in the settings. Under this scenario, for syncing to work, I have to restart Logos wherein it opens with the "use internet" already on from the end of the last session. Then it syncs. I would like this to change.

Actually, this is not an issue. When you have ‘use internet’ to ‘NO’ it will essentially work off-line. ANY and ALL changes made via the program settings requires a restart.

Sync-ing does essentially notes etc., Autoupdates takes care of the resources and the program itself. There would/will be no sync-ing during an off-line study but there will be a 'history' of this so that the next time you go 'on-line' it will sync itself on the restart.

The program is basically set to use on-line, with the option to use off-line should the individuals case be required[other country's].

I know that this does not seem clear, but maybe it will help some......I do not remember if there was a wiki about it or not...

+1. It would be nice to be able to move online and offline without having to restart. I have often booted offline and then wanted to go online and found it strange I could not do so.

After rereading post by Bob Pritchett (CEO) => Cloud Computing: Why you can't sync selectively anticipate Logos answer would be no. Logos 4 syncs all or nothing.

Under this scenario, for syncing to work, I have to restart Logos wherein it opens with the "use internet" already on from the end of the last session. Then it syncs. I would like this to change.

Concur Logos 4 on Mac and PC have some items that require application restart (e.g. Add/Hide Resources, Application updates, Language Interface, Use Internet). Not know if Logos 4 could be modified to have an "airplane" mode so could choose when to be connected (via "Use Internet").

Option: could start Logos 4 while connected to network, then disconnect computer from network so a few minutes later a yellow sync triangle appears. When want to sync Logos 4, then connect computer to network (optionally click sync arrows).

I concur, but, the fact still remains that you did not change anything that required you to restart the program

While you disconnected the ‘Computer’ from the internet the program settings were still the same, the ‘sync’ recognized that there was no ‘internet connect’[false] in order for the *.exe/*.dll to do its assigned function. Therefore no ‘program settings’ changes constitutes no restart. Once the program recognized that there was an ‘internet connect’[true] it resumed its assigned function – again no changes were made to the ‘program settings’ to initiate a restart.

If there is no ‘internet connection’ available upon the initial startup of L4 it will call up the routine to ‘work off-line’[false] because it knows that it cannot sync. OR, one can change the ‘program settings’ to NO and the program will start with the AI accepting that fact and work in an ‘off-line’ manner, thus having the history being the part of the next available sync when going ‘on-line’[true].

A faster startup time can be generated by having auto-updates ‘NO’ and use internet ‘NO’, the program starts w/these two false’s and will not call up the ‘Work off-line’ routine, since they are now part of the Ai, once you change them then the AI[*.exe] will recognize the change.

For grins, unplugged internet cable from my iMac, then started Logos 4.5b Beta 7 (on Mac OS X 10.6.8) to see what would happen. Logos 4 Mac shows a dialog box that includes message: "Unable to connect to Logos.com" that has two buttons: "Sign In" (retry network connection) OR "Work Offline"; also can choose Quit from menu (or use command + q keyboard shortcut). Clicking "Work Offline" does not change program settings, however, sync, updates, and items needing network (e.g. Home Page items, Reading Lists, Passage Guide .com sections) are disabled. Reconnecting network cable while Logos 4 is working offline does not change offline status in Logos 4. To connect to Logos servers, currently need to restart Logos 4 Mac.

When Use Internet is No then setting for Automatically download updates does not matter (effectively ignored).

Option: can launch Logos 4, then quickly press and hold command (Mac) or control (PC) key until a dialog box appears (release key), then click "Work Offline" that allows for faster startup and use while Logos 4 network items are disabled.

Option: could start Logos 4 while connected to network, then disconnect computer from network so a few minutes later a yellow sync triangle appears. When want to sync Logos 4, then connect computer to network (optionally click sync arrows).

Starting Logos 4 (Use Internet set to Yes) while computer is connected to network causes Logos 4 to login to Logos servers and start in online mode. Disconnecting network from computer causes Logos 4 network timeout errors (so yellow triangle appears), which appears in diagnostic log files. Logos 4 periodically retries network connection (yellow triangle disappears while trying). When computer is reconnected to network, then Logos 4 retry can connect to Logos servers (albeit time to sync may take awhile since Logos 4 queued items to sync while Logos 4 was being used).
