Dictionary of the Bible closing 4/27/2012

The Dictionary of the Bible is closing this coming Friday at a very reasonable $10.00. The information says James Hastings is behind this work.

I was in on 5 Vol. Dictionary of the Bible which was also edited by James Hastings, which is currently under development.

I was wondering if the single volume work was simply a condensed version of the five volume work. However, I noticed the following description in the single volume work closing this Friday on CP:

Hasting's one volume Dictionary of the Bible is not simply an abridged or condensed version of his 5-volume work. It is an entirely separate work.

I hope this helps some, who are in a similar position to me, to make up their minds as to whether to buy this second resource from Hastings.

I have bid on all of the other Dictionaries by Hastings, but passed on this one. I have several 1 vol. dictionaries as well as some sets.

I've pre-ordered the 5 volumes version and I've got so many dictionaries that I am not in for this one even though it's a thousand page entirely separate work. I don't think it will add much to the 5 volumes dictionary and ISBE (and even others I've got).

Makes sense cuz what i'm seeing lately is a lot of people going for a bunch of "deals" for books that just sit there and are not used. They jump at every "deal" they see and that's not exercising self control. I bet u anything that all they do it for is to show others and say "look I have 8000 books in my Logos library and they all work in harmony with each other with a click of a mouse." Vanity ov vanities said the preacher! A bunch of classic commentary series that seriously what difference could there be between 28 or more commentaries on the same book of the bible? Duh, hello, that's right not much difference unless it's a series on Revelation due to the various ways of interpreting the book but classics on James or Ecclesiastes, come on, really. Anyway let them waste their money as they please.

Hi Giovanni, I think it's also a matter of necessity for some who may be writing a PhD or MTh and therfore need a lot of resources to write very good works. Frankly, if someone has the money and the need, it is very interesting to buy in CP. Of course if the reason is to get as much pages as possible it becomes problematic in my opinion.

I can crack a joke about this that I've been thinking of. There's a Swedish (in the Nordic, in EU) dating-site for Christians. There's a form for Your profile with a lot of questions. On one line You can answer: do You have a Bible dictionary?

I feel it's so silly to have a Bible dictionary, that when I compiled my initial L4 order four days ago, I wanted to avoid getting Bible dictionaries (and such Bibles that I don't like), so I chose a Base Package (Original Languages), that, if I remember correctly, doesn't have any.

I feel it's so silly to have a Bible dictionary, that when I compiled my initial L4 order four days ago, I wanted to avoid getting Bible dictionaries (and such Bibles that I don't like), so I chose a Base Package (Original Languages), that, if I remember correctly, doesn't have any.

I'm not sure I understand - why is it silly to have a Bible dictionary? I understand not needing a dozen different dictionaries, but I find having the AYBD and the NIBD (in print for now), as well as a few one-volume dictionaries, to be very helpful.

Wiki has => Getting Started with Logos that may be helpful for learning Logos 4.

Observation: noticed Logos base package comparison => http://www.logos.com/comparison has some Original Language resources with Dictionary and Bible in the title:

Dictionary of Bible Themes (type is Bible Concordance)

Exhaustive Dictionary of Bible Names (type is Encyclopedia)

Images from A Dictionary of the Bible (type is a media collection)

If you do not want to use these resource(s) in your Logos library, you can hide them: wiki has => Hiding Books

Note: many dictionaries in Logos are type:encyclopedia because those resources have encyclopedic articles. Personally Thankful for => The Essential IVP Reference Collection Version 3

Noticed projected price for Dictionary of the Bible has dropped to $ 9

Compared some sample entries, noticed attribution for Aaron's Rod was the same (albeit article content was different), but noticed Abaddon, Abanah, Abarin, and Abba have different articles by different people. Hence concur with description about being an entirely separate work.

There's a mistake in the description of this resource on my Logos 4 home page.

As you will see from the attached screen shot, it claims this is the 5 volume edition of a Dictionary of the Bible ( - this CP resource closed a few months ago.) The resource closing this Friday in CP is the single volume work by James Hastings.
