Phone In Deals

Just had an interesting experience. I called Logos to clear up a snafu with my BSM sub and after they did so promptly they said they had some phone in special deals and asked if I'd like to talk to someone about them. I didn't have time at that moment so I said no and don't really plan to add any new books right now.

Just thought I'd share. If you're planning to add something it might be worth a call instead of a click. This seems counterproductive for Logos. I'd think they want to have fewer people call and make the best price available where it costs them the least to transact the business (on the web instead of paying a person to handle a phone call), but I thought I'd share anyway.

No, it is not counterproductive. I think the idea is a "personal service." Although automated phone switchboard is a lot cheaper and more efficient, Bob always insisted on a human answering every call within seconds. I applaud this philosophy and really appreciate it.

Has anyone else done this and if so, could you tell me what sort of resources they tend to be happy to discount? (ie is there an unspoken rule about no discounts on large commentary sets, or from certain publishers?)

I have a large wish list but ringing up and asking for discounts doesn't sit nicely with my British mindset (something that I think I need to change fairly sharpish...).

This may well be. Someome from sales once told me (via e-mail) that at any time there are a number of sales going on, so that the sales people lose track (especially of the things going on at Twitter, Facebook or e-mail). Back then I asked about a larger thing I intended to buy, and they couldn't help, but offered something unrelated that was on sale - which I ended up buying. They don't advertise all the sales to all the people - often you may be rewarded with a discount for giving them something ("likes" on FB, airtime for a rep on the phone or at a conference...) or advancing their efforts into a specific group.

Some people aren't too comfortable with phoning. And over here in Ireland the time zone difference makes it more difficult to phone also (esp. if working in the office during the mornings and being otherwise engaged some afternoons).

I therefore use email most of the time. When I've waited until I've got a bunch of resources to order together, and ask if there is a discount possible, I'm usually pleasantly surprised with the discount possible. (However, I dont bother asking for discount on single purchases at relatively low prices, for resources that I need immediately. Naturally, pre-pubs, community pricing, and other already discounted resources cannot be expected to be discounted further.)

As with many business transactions, personal contact often results in a better deal.

More recently, I contact Santiago, who has always been very helpful.

I got a great deal on the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary by doing this, almost half off. I think the idea is that even though phone calls cost more, online ordering doesn't give them the opportunity to upsell.

Totally agree, that's why I supplied an email address. I do have a lot of sympathy with your comments above as I live in the same time zone as you (London,England) and I am also not comfortable with this phoning in stuff. I wish Logos just did all their sales on-line but as you can see from another poster on this thread, some folks just like the personal touch. Therein lies some of the cultural differences, not my cup of tea but I can live with it within limits.

I thought it might just be my generation - a cyber generation who prefer to text or instant message. It's odd how I work on a customer support desk and yet I'm terrified of making phone calls (which is why I'm not in Sales, I guess).

Sales Rep Dave Kaplan or, in his absence, usually Santiago, his supervisor. I now call for everything except CPs and the periodic "free" books. They may not be able to get you a better deal on a Pre-Pub, but they may be aware of other deals or sales, and it helps their job evaluation and/or commission/salary for them to place your order rather than you doing the point-and-click. Plus, if you're a good customer you may get a 45-day return policy, rather than the usual 30. And, in one case, because I was unsure if I should wait for March Madness to see if the price went down, I got a 6-month price guarantee. It pays to call. [H]

Hi Ted, yes there are some cultural differences at times esp. when there is language barrier (not too much of a problem from here to there, though). Yet even within cultures different personality traits can be seen where some prefer talking personally, while other prefer impersonal communication like email or text, or even next to none at all at times - I know people at both extremes even within the same family! It's great that Logos offers us both types so professionally.

Agreed. Not only that, to some Brits calling and asking for the best deal seems like haggling over price, even though that might not be Logos intention.
