Translators' footnotes verses cross references

In my Logos versions of the NIV 2011, the ESV and the HCSB (and presumably in other versions as well) there are two kinds of footnotes, translators notes and cross references. For an example, look at 1 Samuel 2:20 in the NIV 2011. After the word "prayed" there is a superscript "l" which links to a footnote that says "See 1 Sa 1:27". After the word "to" there is an italic "c" superscript which links to a note that says "Dead Sea Scrolls; Masoretic Text and asked from." The second footnote is a translators' footnote. It is part of the translation produced by Biblica and part of evaluating the relative merits of the translation is evaluating the footnotes. The first footnote is a cross reference put in by the editors of the edition Logos used to create the electronic NIV. It is not a part of the translation. A similar thing happens with both the ESV and the HCSB, except that in both of those cases, the cross reference footnotes are sequential with the translators footnotes, so you can't even pick them out easily. I am trying to evaluate the translations. I would like to know if there is a way to shut off the cross references WITHOUT shutting off the translators' footnotes. Clearly, you can shut them all off, but that wouldn't really help me.

Geoffrey - First, welcome to the forums!
I think the answer is no. I understand what you are wanting to do, but I think the cross references come with the translation itself. Do you have an example where they do not? The websites I have checked all have the same cross reference.

Interesting question. No I can't point to any electronic edition. But it would be easy to show print editions that don't have the cross referencs. I am currently engaged in a translation comparison project. Translation footnotes count. Cross references from study editions don't.

Welcome [:D]
One option is showing footnotes on page with one column (then can ignore superscripts for cross references):
By the way, The NET Bible has an abundance of translation footnotes. Also, the Lexham English Bible has several to consider.
Keep Smiling [:)]
