Can I...

I've done some searching around and still not certain about this. I'm using the Bible Search tool and have compiled a NT list of related words (pray/prays/prayer/prayers/praying/prayed) in various translations (NRSV, NASB95, and NET)...actually a different list for each translation, but that is irrelevant. I am looking for certain affects or potential affects in the text connected to prayer. Not all "prayers" concern what I'm researching. For example "devote yourself to prayer and supplication" is a text I would not use in this particular search.

Is it possible in the Bible Search tool to eliminate texts from a generated list? My work around was exporting the list to Excel and then removing them there, which is fine and gets me what I need. I would like this to be done in Logos though...any thoughts, help, or comments?

Hi David,

I think using a set of passage lists created from your search and then adjusted for those verses you want to keep. Below is a screen shot based on a bible search for prayer in the ESV. Once in a passage verse you can do lots of things with the passages such as remove those you do not want, add additional verses, merge with other lists, show multiple translations etc.

If you have a list of those passage you do NOT want, then you could use the "merge" operation to remove them from other lists. (See below.) The merge drop down button gives you all possible action with two lists. Sometimes I do several "merges" do get just the list I want. I do this a lot to build passage course content for teaching.

One thought is refining search (adding terms) to find relevant results (match all word forms):

(pray,prayer) WITHIN 12 WORDS (heal,work,effective,powerful,righteous)

You all are great! Thanks for the help, but I don't think I was clear so I am including a screen shot of what I have.

Also, if this looks a little different it's because I'm running Mac. I'm not totally familiar with Merge, so I'll have to play around with that.

What I ended up doing earlier was Print/Export and sent it to an Excel spreadsheet. I then removed the texts I didn't wan't to include, which is what I wanted to accomplish in Logos (similar to utilizing Passage Guide and removing specific resources). From this pic, as an example, I left out, Matthew 21:13 because "house of prayer" didn't show prayer utilized toward a specific situation.

I'm doing this for a paper, so I'm not asking for help on the paper, just getting this to do what I want for future use.

The goal of the paper is to analyze the "effectual prayer" texts in the New Testament to determine if prayer changes things or not. The paper will, by very nature, flirt with Calvinism and Arminianism as well as Classic Theism, Process Theism, and Open Theism. FUN STUFF!!! YAY!!!

Here is a Logos resource you might find useful.

An Exposition on Prayer in the Bible (5 vols.) by
Dr. James Rosscup: learn about more than 1,000 references to prayer in
61 of the Bible's 66 books. This five-volume collection on prayer
compiles 50 years worth of Dr. Rosscup's teachings on prayer.

You could easily build a passage list containing all 1000 passages by simply selecting all the text in each of the volumes and building your passage list using the "add" button near the top of the passage list panel and using the "... selected text" option.

I do this sort of thing a lot when building course material. I seldom build passage lists that are a 1000 passages long, but working through 300 passages for a single course is not uncommon. I write a number of questions for the learners to answer from what they observe in each passage. Discussing those answers is what we do in the classroom.
