Oxyrhynchus Papyri

I was interested to read the blog post about the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, but I'm wondering whether it's worth purchasing the original documents on CP for $150 when I already have Moulton and Milligan's 'Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament'. I'm assuming they are the same papyri?

I know having the source can be useful, but it's a lot of money...

Can anyone advise?

I would like to see this, but I think the set has stalled because the price is too high. I'm in at $90 though even that might be too high to attract enough bidders. I'd suggest bidding what you feel would be the appropriate price.

I've been in at $150 since it was first announced, and hoping it will drop to $70 like the Patrologia Cursus Completus, Series Graeca, Part 1 (vols. 1–18) went from $399 to $90. I can happily sit and wait a long time for this; no hurry. Hopefully it will languish long enough for Logos and CP bidders to get it way down in price.

Sorry, I'll clarify - is it worth having the original source text, or is a work such as 'The Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament' (which references the same text, I assume) sufficient for most people?

Not to get too far off of Chakde's question (but referring to the blog), I always wonder about the often stated 'Holy Ghost greek'. I'm not questioning the blog; it was well written and very interesting.

But having read quite a bit in the late 1800s and early 1900s, from what I can see, greek scholars already had quite a bit of papyri to work off of, though not on the order of Oxyrhynchus. Much of the translations from the greek were simply confirmed (the bigger issue being the newly emerging manuscripts).

But in answer to Chakde's question, it'd be nice to have more examples than MM lists; sometimes MM just whets your appetite. And it's approaching it's centenarian (sp?) birthday too.

Thanks DMB. Are there any other resources (by which I mean reference works rather than source texts) which would fill in any gaps left by MM? I'd love to buy the original texts but I wouldn't know where to begin in actually using them to any great effect.

Well, if you previously downloaded the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri (Logos free), four of them come from Oxy (sounds like 'Oxy-free!!); per an earlier thread, these don't overlap the subject resource, but you can get a feel for what you're wondering about.

Your question is largely a personal one; it depends on how 'suspicious' you are (I'm joking). I'm the suspicious type, wanting more examples, especially for the late Pauline writings. But it's not easy sledding.

From what I've seen, MM is still a solid resource; can't complain too much. In order of greek lexicons, I go there first, then Liddell Scott and TLNT, and if absolutely necessary, BDAG.

I'm extremely suspicious, but unfortunately I'm also extremely prone to 'brain freeze' when I do research. I'm having enough trouble getting my head round Louw-Nida (I'm new at this, can you tell?).

I'm not entirely sure what you might specifically be needing, but Logos has "The Text of the Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts", which contains all of the Oxyrhynchus material on the NT Greek text, and it's only $39.95. I am assuming that the new CP collection includes items beyond that (from classical literature). If that's an incorrect assumption, other forum members more knowledgable than I can chime in. SO I suppose it depends on what your needs/interests might be. I'm passing on this one, as I have the resource I have indicated in this post, and I can't justify the high price for the CP... but that just reflects my own interests/needs.

Yeah, strange... surely didn't mean to duplicate post. I stopped the transmission as I have a Suuuuppper sslllooooooooowwww internet connection here; then I reread it, and added "NT", as what I meant to say was that the Greek NT texts from Oxy are included in this collection. Obviously, the collection does not include non-NT Greek texts, which I had erroneously posted. Then I sent it again... assuming that if the original posted, it wouldn't allow a repost. Guess I was wrong [:$] My apologies!

Alternatively, you could both contribute to the Chakde India Greek Text Resource Fund (CIGTRF, sounds quite catchy). I could also raise funding by going round catching duplicate posters and promising not to shop them in, in exchange for volumes of the Pillar New Testament Commentary.

I'm getting the impression that there are a lot of people who are somewhat interested in this, but not at anywhere near the current price, and who therefore don't bid at all. Please don't do that. You are helping to keep the price high. If you're interested enough to pay 90 or 50 or 30 or even 10, then please put in a bid at that level, even if it looks ridiculous today. The more people who do that, the more other people are inspired to follow.

Remember that even if there are enough people out there to put it over the top at $50 today, if all of them give up beforehand and don't bid at all, it'll nevertheless end up going for $150 or so a year or two down the road. And that's not in anyone's interest.

Yes, what you say makes sense, fgh. I would only have very slight interest, but I will put in a minimal bid, for what it is worth. Thanks for reminding. Hopefully others will do the same. But did want to suggest an alternative immediately available to the author of the OP that may provide what he is looking for.

You are also right about the "duplicate" post... don't let that out, though. Could be an easy approach to creating abuse, and multiple posts... which would then cost Denise a fortune.

Aha! I finally got round to checking your suggestion and discovered that it's included in my base package. But I might put in a smallish bid on the Oxywhojamawhatsitthingy Papyri anyway, as the secular literature also interests me.
