Judging by the shape of the graph for the Book of Common Prayer on Community Pricing, the price could fall fast with a few more bids, before it closes on Friday. You don't have to be Anglican to appreciate it, and it may be worth even a fairly low bid for this one. How much would you pay?

Agree. I'm not Anglican but I reckon it's worth $40 so that's what I've bid. It looks acheivable at that price if a few more think likewise...

The Book of Common Prayer is a key part of the development of the English Speaking Church as we know it today. It was not only an attempt to develop a pattern for prayer that we could do in "common", ie: when we get together as the church, as opposed to private prayer that we do individually at home, at work, continually, it was an attempt to change the church culture from the people being an audience, watching the leader(s) perform, to being participants in church and a guide to developing a daily prayer life. While it can be used for the main service on a Sunday, that was not its primary intent. It was intended to provide guidance for focussing your life on God many times each and every day, Morning prayer, mid day prayer, evening prayer and compline and of course some help with prayers for families and for special occasions, leading up to Sundays as the main special occasion in the community. Obviously a big step to change people from going to church to watch the leaders perform to actually being participants so that anyone could lead the prayers. If you want greater participation and more people willing and able to lead the prayers we do in common in church then it helps to provide some guidance, as not everyone is willing and able to do this "spontaneously" (but a significantly greater number are willing and able to read from a book of prayers). Next big step of course had to be to teach more people to read (as many were illiterate); again it helps if they have heard the prayers often enough before that they can read the prayers from the book well before they could be expected to read a text never previously seen. That way you could get much greater participation. This Book of Comon Prayer was a key part of the development of the church we know today.

Perhaps first you would need to learn what that means. English is not a language, it is a group of languages. Which dialect do you specialize in ?

I think you vastly underestimate medieval people's participation in the liturgy. I also think you vastly overestimate 16th century literacy, and I suspect -- though I don't know -- that you vastly overestimate early Anglican interest in lay ministry.

In Sweden the Reformation pretty much transformed laypeople from active worshippers to passive listeners, the priests from servants to rulers, and the Church from a church of the people to the State's instrument for controlling its subjects. I suspect it wasn't all that different in England (though perhaps in some ways less extreme).

Feel free to push this or any other resource, but please don't do it by promoting prejudice and slandering another church.

As the use of English in worship services spread, the need for a complete uniform liturgy for the Church became evident. Initial meetings to start what would eventually become the Book of Common Prayer were held in the former abbey of Chertsey and in Windsor Castle in September 1548. The list of participants can only be partially reconstructed, but it is known that the members were balanced between conservatives and reformers. These meetings were followed by a debate on the Eucharist in the House of Lords which took place between 14 and 19 December. Cranmer publicly revealed in this debate that he had abandoned the doctrine of the real presence and believed that the Eucharistic presence was only spiritual.^[69] Parliament backed the publication of the Prayer Book after Christmas by passing the Act of Uniformity 1549; it then legalised clerical marriage.^[70]

It is difficult to ascertain how much of the Prayer Book is actually Cranmer’s personal composition. Generations of liturgical scholars have been able to track down the sources that he used, including the Sarum Rite, writings from Hermann von Wied, and several Lutheran sources including Osiander and Justus Jonas.^[71] More problematic is determining how Cranmer worked on the book and with whom he worked. Despite the lack of knowledge of who might have helped him, however, he is given the credit for the editorship and the overall structure of the book.^[72]
