Logos 4 upgrades

My questions regarding Logos 4 upgrades are primarily compatibility issues.

1. Will my current resources work under Logos 4 or do I have to upgrade the entire collection?

2. If I keep Logos 3 will new resources function under Logos 3. In the past I have had to have the latest version to use new resources.

3. Why is the required disk space so large? This suggests a huge program with many possibilities for bugs.

4. I am not very interested in a new interface that has a long learning curve. I don't want what MS did with Office 2007 where they did the automotive equivalent of switching the positions of the brake and accelerator.

5. I use computers not because I think that they are "cool" but to get things done.

6. I learned about Logos 4 because I followed a newswire to the homepage. This wasn't a Logos 4 announcement but a general one.

The FAQs simply don't address compatibility or other issues.

I suspect the this will be an excellent product but I think that more information needs to be placed on the web site.

While I'm at it I object to being forced to buy entire collections when I may only want one or two of the books. I understand that the per book price may be higher but I think that this should be an option.

L3 resources will work in L4 (exception at the moment is PBB's which will be available 2nd quarter 2010. See "what's missing" in my sig for details.

Mostly yes. There are some L4 resources such as the new interlinears which are dependant on the L4 technology to work. Many other resources, including new ones will be compiled for both L4 and for L3.

Once you've installed the licenses in L4, simply load L3 - sync your licenses, and then download your books from the FTP server (ftp://ftp.logos.com/lbxbooks).

Actually it suggests a significant ammount of resources with significant internal tagging. I have a 3000 book library that takes up 3.5" as a hard drive. That would be dozens of bookshelves, and many - many boardfeet of wood.

Fortunately L3 will continue to be supported for the forseable future. L4 is a radical departure with purpose. It looks to the future of computing technology not to the past. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade, continue to use L3 for as long as you like and enjoy it. It still works.

Then by all means, do what it takes to get things done, including run L3.

It's growing, as we forum rats get caught up. When we get tired of typing the same answers like these, we update the FAQ
so we can send you there in the future. We really are trying to do everything we can - we're not paid, we're not employed by Logos, we love you and we love the software, we're just trying to help.

Definitely a noted concern, including Logos has noticed it. And believe me, certain pages have been expanding and growing with information. By all means if you see a specific issue, please post it here and it will be cared for as soon as they can.

Two possible answers depending on what you mean.

1. No one is forcing you to buy anything. I didn't whip out a pistol and demand you buy. If you only want the ESV just buy it. If you want the collection that it comes with, buy it. only In very rare circumstances are books not available outside of the base packages - and I can't think of any off the top of my head.

2. If you mean buying all of a commentary set like NICOT/NICNT the answer is different and has a reason with it. Collections like NIC and WBC are negotiated with the publisher and Logos. Usually / sometimes the publisher demands that in order for Logos to gain rights to a set they have to sell all or none. So Logos will put the set on prepub to see if it floats. If it does it goes into production - if not, it doesn't. Sometimes down the road, the publisher will relent and permit collections to be broken up. I believe the ICC series is an example that was once sold as a collection only and now (I think) is also available separately.

Your current resources will work in 4.0. Where newer versions of your resources are available, 4.0 will find them and download them for you.

Yes. You will need new files of the new 4.0 resources that work in 3.0, but a batch processing script to manage this conversion is in the works but not yet available.

3. Why is the required disk space so large?

Most of the space is taken up by your resources and the index that Logos 4 creates. To have backward compatibility with 3.0, all your resources will be 'duplicated' in 4.0 format. I have about 2600 resources and this takes up about 11 GB on my hard drive. The rest of the program components only take up a few hundred MB.

4. I am not very interested in a new interface that has a long learning curve.

There is a big change in the way 4.0 works, so you may not want it for that reason. People coming to 4.0 without a 3.0 background won't spend time trying to figure out how an old function in 3.0 works in 4.0, but most of the rest of us do. You can do simple things pretty easily in 4.0, but there is often a learning curve to figure out how to do them. There are videos on the Logos web site that can help.

That is what Logos 4 was designed for. My own experience was that it took a while to get adjusted to it.

One other thing: be sure your computer is up to the challenge of Logos 4.0. You can read the FAQ on the Logos site about the minimum requirements, but the software was designed for computers two years old or less. Having 3-4 GB of memory seems to be important, although you can do with 2.
