The ribbon - any plans or will it continue to be a waste of space?

I have MS Office 2007, and although the ribbon took some time to get used to, it has lots of features, and is useful.

Can't wait for Office 2010. The ribbon is supposed to be editable.

he's referring to the section of the homepage that has the reading plans, preferred Bible, and lectionaries. I agree, I think it could be more usable and customizable.

Ahh. Well, that's not very ribbon like -- which is what confused me. My first guess had been the three boxs: Home, Library, Search. Don't need much more than that.

Yes, on the homepage, the light blue 2" or so at the top that contains the logos logo (that is kinda funny), the passage search, and the choose perfered bible, reading plan, lectionary and recent reading plans.

Yeah, don't let the nomenclature confuse you here. I could be wrong, but I think it gained the name ribbon during beta. I always called it the ribbon because it was a blue strip without purpose... yeah, kinda lame.

I've got a pretty large screen (2@22") so I barely note the Ribbon, though on smaller systems I can see it's a waste of space since I think it's fixed in height. I think from Damian's description it's near disaster status on a netbook.

Customizability, obviously beyond drag and drop in the customize pane, there isn't any. Pity. I believe we were told however that there would be more choices coming. I'm not sure if that just means more items to rearrange or if it means something more...

I think that is part of the toolbar, which I agree, is pretty complete.

If I was designing it, I would allow the reading plans, lectionary, and recent reading lists to be optional (I would only have the bible reading plan of those). The preferred bible could easily be in the tools. Other things to go up there - text size, other search options, maybe something with notes, themes of the program...I am sure there are lots of others.

the ability to take the lexionary, prefer bible, and reading list off of the ribbon

AND

if the ribbon was about 1/3 its current height...

I have two laptops and I agree it's wasted space. In Logos 3 you can set all of those settings on your homepage and then close the window. I never use a lectionary, I know how to change my preferred Bible and the Bible reading plan doesn't need that much space.

That about sums up what I'm reading Robert. Or if it (gasp) just autohid. In fact just add a fourth Icon next to Home | Library| search. Make the icon a Calendar and click it to expose all this goodness that is the Ribbon. combine that bible search box with the commandbar since it's partially redundant...

what if instead it functioned more like the Lock/unlock of the Windows Taskbar? Right Click>Lock would keep the current view, Unlock would show the maximize/minimize arrow.

I tried the Tech Preview a while back and it was buggy and a pain. But this one is much more stable. The biggest change in Word is the new File menu. If you have used Word 2007 then you know there was an Office icon where all the things that are normally on the File menu go. In Office 2010 there is a lot more control here for things like templates, sharing, publishing to other formats. Also a big part is integration with Windows Live Skydrive. They hope to have a fully functionally but somewhat limited version of Office online, like Google Docs or Zoho. Right now you just share it online and view it there using your skydrive account.

If you use Onenote, there is a different kind of syncing that is supposed to be much better. You can sync over a home/office network and eventually over the web. The web part doesn't work yet.

Are you saying MS is too much evil or my waving the beta in front of your face is too much evil?

I like 2010. Not a huge difference in Word and haven't even opened Outlook (I use gmail online mostly). OneNote will be better when the sync feature is in place.
