Touch screen and Tablet Support

Hi all

I'm running Logos on my desktop and my new Asus EP121. While I love the ability to use full Logos on my tablet, one thing I find a little frustrating is the poor usability on the touch screen. For instance, most applications can distinguish between mouse, stylus and finger, and respond appropriately. One Note, for instance, will move curser, draw a line, and scroll respectively for each of those (which is awesome, by the way Smile ). Logos, however, interprets everything as clicking or click/dragging. I can't swipe to scroll resources; I have to poke the arrows. There is no mouse-wheel equivalent on a tablet.

I guess I'm posting to request/ask if the Logos team are working on enhancing touch screen usability. My super wishlist request would be to be able to use the stylus to write directly on resources (I know.. I can dream). My more down-to-earth request would be for support for swiping to scroll resources.

Any plans?

BTDT - have had mine for over a year now, and love it. the interface on teh ipad was good, but too limited in functionality of what I wanted to use my l4 for.

I find that my workaround is that I have extra touch-pens laying all over the place. even so, I would not trade this back to a tablet-device (ipad/android) for anything.

Have made these suggestions several other places on teh forums here as well.

For anyone responding to Brent's great advice, if you start looking for W7 tablets, there's several things you may or may not want to consider:

- 'Touch screen' is just that, similar to an iPad or smartphone. Typically any object touching the screen reproduces a mouse-click. Some can distinguish a large 'fingerprint' indicating a finger touch, palm-rest, versus a small pen-touch. 'Touch' significance: (1) software not programmed for touch typically has very small icons, scrollbars, etc making a pen almost necessary and (2) since only a screen touch is feasible, popups only occur when it's too late (you effectively did a mouse click).

- 'Digitizing screen' is a little fancier. With this, a pen is provided which communicates with the screen. Thus as you move the pen near the screen, the effect is similar to moving your mouse around, without clicking. Most digitizing pens have 1 or 2 buttons, which can be set to match a mouse or specialized actions.

- Some PCs do both 'touch' and 'digitizing'. Depending on the PC, this means 2 drivers with system software to coordinate the two. On the Lenovo 220 Tablet, it supports both, and two separate calibrations are provided (due to the angle of view). It distinguishes pen vs touch by seeing if the pen is near; if not, it assumes 'touch'. This is important if you like to rest your palm on the screen while writing.

For me, a pen is critical with Logos4. I do have Logos4 optimized for finger touch but in church, it's almost impossible to use and listen to the pastor. A pen appears a little more nutty, but it's easier. I also have the digitizer approach so I can easily see the Logos popups (which drive me crazy).

To optimize Logos4 for finger touch I tried using 'Columns = 1' but that wasted too much space (I don't know why but the developers expand the side margins with columns on). Instead someone else suggested setting overall settings 'Program Scaling' high and then move the text size down. That works good. I have mine set to 140% scaling and then the text size minimum per resource.

I also keep a popup keyboard open, with only the right-side pageup/page down showing. That solves the page-turning problem. The last issue mentioned by the OP was Logos reliance on the mouse wheel. Luckily on my popup keyboard, you can hold the control down with one finger while touching the '+' or '-' for zooming. Would be a lot better with a zoom icon but that would be so 'yesterday'.

Yep, working with the Maps in Logos4Win on a tablet can be a *real pain* -- graphics normally open unreadably small, and trying to expand them without a normal keyboard mouse interface is unpleasant---why not put a slider control for zoom on the graphic?
