Fresh Ideas for Layouts

Hey Everyone, I have been using one or two layouts for the last year. One for NT and OT, but the similar layout. I think I got it from Mark Barnes. Here is my layout:

Top Left: Greek, Lexham, Search and various Guides

Bottom Left: Information, Power Lookup, and other Bible Versions

Top Right: Commentaries

Bottom Right: Lexicons, Bible Dictionaries

Side monitor: Text Comparison

Any suggestions for improvement?

I developed it with more of my Background Commentaries (zondervan, ivp), bible handbooks, and collections with Church fathers, Ap&Psuedo, Philo

My system is pretty slow, which is why they are all open. I felt it took to long to open a new commentary. I do not do too many searches.

If your system is slow you should have as few resources as possible open. You should also avoid linking anything that isn't absolutely necessary to link, especially things like the PG, the EG and the TC.

A layout like the one you've set up requires a very powerful computer. If you don't have that, no wonder if things take forever!

Jerry mentions an unfortunate tradeoff with Logos4: opening a resource vs keeping one open with the cost of the associated links.

When I was using a netbook, I did what Jerry's doing. My first priority was using the resources and just opening them was excruciatingly painful; ironic given that the point was to actually use the books.

I still use a large layout with a good PC since it's convenient. But I made the mistake of putting some highlights on some poorly formatted resources and the whole system went to 'netbook' performance. Lesson learned.

opening a resource vs keeping one open

I'd rather wait once in a while for a new resource to open, than wait for every single tiny thing I want to do. Not to talk about the fact that if I tried to use a layout like that, Logos would probably crash on me pretty quickly. (And even if it didn't it would still eat up my RAM in no time, forcing me to restart the computer once or twice an hour. That takes much longer time than opening a new resource.)

I felt it took to long to open a new commentary.

Personally have two commentary series in my Top 5 Bible priorities so right click in a Bible, click selection, have option to open a commentary or two along with other Bibles. Once a commentary is open (and has focus), can click "+" to open a new tab, which has a list of prioritized commentaries on the right side that contain verse within range of comments.

For Exegetical Guide, the Word by Word section can take awhile to populate. One speed tip is collapsing Guide section(s) not being used.

Once a commentary is open (and has focus), can click "+" to open a new tab, which has a list of prioritized commentaries on the right side that contain verse within range of comments.

I prefer to use cmd-right arrow (or the parallel resources button) instead of the +. One tab less to slow things down, plus it keeps the link in place.

Frankly, I find your layout quite useful. My design differs not one iota from yours and has been helping me wade at a progressively more efficient manner.
