"There’s Never Been a Worse Time to Buy a Laptop" (Gizmodo)

So maybe I'll wait a few more months to get my long-waited-for laptop so I can do Logos to and from work:

I agree with the tenor of the article, though I wouldn't use the word "worst." Fortunately, I don't need to be in the market anytime soon, but were I needing a new computer, I would try to limp along with what I had for a few more months.

Having intended to wait for the next Intel generation but then getting a computer a couple of weeks ago, I tend to disagree. There are some great bargains to be had in the "old stuff". But I do understand the logic of the article and know several people for whom it would be very true.

I agree with MJ on this one. I just took delivery last week of a refurbished (under $1000) Dell 15z which already has some of the "upcoming" technology with a 2nd generation i7 processor, lots of RAM, discrete graphics and a hybrid HD that makes Logos a JOY to use!
Making Disciples! Logos Ecosystem = LogosMax on Microsoft Surface Pro 7 (Win11), Android app on tablet, FSB on iPhone & iPad mini, Proclaim (Proclaim Remote on Fire Tablet).

By "upcoming" I refer to USB 3.0, eSATA port, DisplayPort
I enjoy using Win7 because many of the bugs have already been worked out, while Win8 is sure to be tweaked after it is released.

Quite true. But when a member of the household works for an electronics firm ...[:D]

I am considering buying a new laptop and was wondering if the "wait" that was the consensus of this thread in June is still a good idea. When do the forum folks anticipate it would be a good time to buy and get those "great bargains"?0 -

I try to purchase my big picture items during the holiday season.

Today noticed Dell Outlet has new arrivals of R edition laptops with 3rd generation i5 and i7 processors.

You can wait and wait and wait because there's always going to be the next best or newest item around the corner.
Technology is always advancing. I went ahead and purchased the retina MBP. I will use it for 1 or 2 year(s) then upgrade. Resale value on these are pretty decent and I know I can get quite a bit for it. Been doing this for many years.

Intel 4th Generation i5 & i7 are now available in a variety of devices. Dell Outlet Hot Deals includes a 17" laptop with 3rd generation i5:
Would install a Solid State Disk (SSD) for Logos 5 use.

Wait a minute, this feels like dejavu, haven't we heard, "there's never been a worse time to buy a laptop" before? I believe sometime to this effect was said before in 2012 as well as back before the Nehalem CPU's came out. (Edit: should have read the entire thread. [:S]) It seems like a new CPU series is always around the corner, if only we'd just wait a little bit longer. And, we all do, but as soon as it comes out there are rumors of something even better. It, is always a bad time to buy a laptop, but then again it may also be a good time to get great deals on yesterday's tech. Today's Laptop/Notebook PC with 9cell batteries can run for about 5 to 6 hours if you running them on power saver mode. My old Toshiba Netbook with Atom CPU ran for about 9 and half hours, but it was a way underpowered CPU. So, these new Cpu's maybe something else.
Anyway, at this late in the year I'd wait too.

Opps[:$], well I guess I am not going to be able to get myself out of this one. Well, here is a newer article from gizmodo that essential say the same thing: http://gizmodo.com/now-is-a-horrible-time-to-buy-a-laptop-496028699 so I guess that would make now the right time to buy a laptop?

At the moment you can still get some computers that will ship with Windows 7 rather than Windows 8. That is a rather compelling reason to buy now. Windows 8 is a pile of dog dung.

I agree windows 8 is illogical at this point I have no idea what they were trying to accomplish. It loads up to a meaningless curtain like screen you have to click on to get to the log on screen and then when the new Windows GUI loads up you still need to click again just to get to the desktop and then finally you can boot up your programs. Or, of course you can click on your program icon from the Windows GUI which will take you to the desktop and then open your program. I am not sure what part of all that is progress but it makes little sense to me.
Hope, windows 9 will be better, but I think I may just switch to the dark side and buy a MacBook Pro.

That is indeed the dark side. If I were illiterate and wanted to play around with silly little pictures, I might have bought a MAC, but since I can indeed read, I prefer a PC—up until now.

I may no longer prefer Windows, but I still prefer being able to configure, modify, and even build my own PC. For me PC meant freedom, choice, and power. Yeah, Windows XP and Windows 7 were/are great ! But, now I guess, crippled GUI, apps, and tablets are the way of the future, for Windows at least, maybe I'll be okay but I'll need a real keyboard for productivity and a command line every once and a while.

Strong statement indeed but it is nevertheless an uninformed one.
Are they reasons to complain about Windows 8 interface? Yes, unless you are using a touch screen and even then. However there is more to an operating system than its interface. Programs like Start8 ($5) and to a lesser measure the upcoming Windows 8.1 update fix most of the interface issues.
What makes Windows 8 great are the innovations under the hood beginning with the install and startup process, the greater stability and security (as someone who is the designated tech support of friends and family and build my own machines, this is something I surely appreciate). I could also mention the greater driver and peripheral support out of the box. there is also better multiple monitor support, file and storage management (even creating a storage pool across multiple hard drives and file history), and recovery options.
For power users and even those who are not part of that group, Windows 8 is a clear improvement over windows 7 and earlier Oses. The issues with the interface while a big deal for many can be easily fixed with the right programs and certainly do not outweigh the clear benefits of Windows 8.
My advice as a former IT consultant and still computer enthusiast is to get Windows 8 (upgrade to 8.1 in October) and patch it with a program that solves the interface issues.

I'm afraid there are more than simply problems with the interface which seems to indicate an uninformed view by my interlocutor. I have already had to restore this new laptop to its factory condition since somehow there were absolute gobs of programs installed on it to the point where there were only a very few megabytes of free space remaining. As regards stability, I have never had to shut down and reopen my email so often as I have since getting this laptop with Windows 8. Even when I play a game such as Mahjong I have to twiddle my thumbs through 3 screens before I even get to choose which layout I want. Links sometimes refuse to open and leave me staring at a blank screen. Don't try to tell me that Windows 8 is an improvement "under the hood." Windows 8 is a disaster.

Apologies [:$] for belated reply. Noticed Forum Home Page has Your Discussions with 155 pages (7,738 threads); found some had replies that personally had not read since began working full time. With 500K forum posting celebration, was wondering what threads were missing a follow-up reply.
Thankful for Logos 5 on Windows 7. Am aware Windows 8 is visibly different that would work better with a touch screen. Personally watching and waiting for 4th Generation Intel i5 and i7 for Logos use. Pondering Microsoft TechNet Subscription before end of Aug 2013 so would have option to install Windows 7 on new hardware.
Keep Smiling [:)]

Windows 8 is Windows 7 with the user interface crippled in a failed attempt by Microsoft to leverage their monopoly position in the PC market, with the goal of extending this monopoly into the area of tablets and portable devices.
The market hath spoken. Windows RT is a complete and total flop, and has zero chance of overthrowing apple or google in those markets. Even MS CEO Ballmer is admitting it now, and the recent price slashing of Windows RT surface tablets is the proof. Microsoft is writing those tablets off as a $900,000,000 loss. That's a big write off.
Windows 7 will continue to be the Microsoft desktop operating system of choice for power PC users, IT people and corporations of all sizes for a long time to come. If and when Microsoft recovers from its misguided attempts to force people to use a new and useless interface, sales numbers might recover slightly.
[quote]
The Verge reports that Microsoft held an in-house town hall event this week where Ballmer admitted to Microsoft employees that the company “built a few more” Surface RT tablets “than we could sell,” which might be an understatement given Microsoft’s recent $900 million charge that some analysts claim translates to as many as 6 million unsold Surfaces piled up in warehouses.
