Portfolio library

I have the Platinum package and am contemplating upgrading next year to the Platinum. Does the comparison on the Logos website include all items in the Platinum package? Has anyone else made this upgrade and been disappointed? I'm wondering if this is the right step for me or if I should focus upon buying sets related to my study.

Does anyone have any other recommendations for library building? I know there are a lot of different packages on Logos. As I look at the Portfolio, I don't know that it is worth the jump in upgrade cost for me personally. Several of the resources, I'm not sure that I would use very often.

Kevin, it would probably help forum users to know the following to help better advise you: (1) which major resources you own (if any) in addition to your Platinum base package; and (2) what you plan on primarily using Logos for (i.e. church ministry, personal study, academic study/teaching. etc.)

I'm new to Logos and so other than a few items I bought through community pricing, all I own is my base package. I pastor a church and am finishing a DTh in Practical Theology from the University of South Africa. I plan to both teach and pastor.

My first goal is to purchase more general resources that will assist me no matter what I am preparing for, such as Bible dictionaries, whole-Bible commentary sets, etc.

I looked at a lot of packages on Logos and just want to be sure that I get the most for the limited amount of money I have to spend.

I also own the Platinum package. It seems to me that the consensus is that the platinum is the most "bang for the buck" and most users will supplement the platinum with other purchases more relevant to their needs. This is best done through special sales, especially @ Thanksgiving; Christmas; and "March Madness."

Kevin, I would reccomend Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary, and Word Biblical Commentary. Make sure to get the latter via Zondervan bundle. If you are in a position to call, ask for a sales rep. They can offer you a better discount, and be sure to mention that you are a student. Deeper discount still on some titles. My sales rep. is Dave Kaplan.

I do have the academic discount and it is a really good discount. I have seen sales that even beat the academic discount though. Word Biblical Commentary was offered in the spring in a package that was better than even the academic price, but I didn't have the money at the time.

If you do a quick search, this is one resource in particular which can be picked up on disc A LOT more cheaply via other Christian software providers.

That said, it's still a considerable investment all in one go - especially if you have just bought the Platinum base package - therefore you may opt to buy it from Logos to benefit from a payment plan.

I have looked at that option and that is what I plan to do if there are some good sales toward the end of the year. I'm new to Logos, so I just shelled out everything I can this year to get the platinum package.

I came to this conclusion rather quickly by comparing the Portfolio upgrade cost with those remaining resources I was really interested in. Again, your experience may be different but I have a feeling it won't be.

Btw I did pick up The Word Commentary series in a Thomas Nelson bundle at Christmas, and was able to use a credit system they had at that time to obtain some other resources for free in the New Year (2012). Building a Wish List of preferred resources opposed to upgrading will probably be your best option where you have Platinum. With specials you can eventually acquire the library you wish to build for a lot less than the upgrade, and that with the resources you really wanted.

I think I have come to the same conclusion. I believe the Platinum package is where I need to stop and focus on individual resources. From some of the comments here, it looks like Christmas is the time to buy.

I looked at the Nelson Bible Reference Bundle. It looks like that definitely needs to be my next purchase. Hopefully, it will be on sale again this Christmas.

Cannot be certain as I purchased several items at Christmas. I remember the bundle being sold for the same cost as just the WBC series alone. Though I had some of the other resources in the bundle, it appeared to be a good opportunity and competitive enough with regards to a special another party was offering with regards to the WBC series.

Look in particular for those that appear to have a significant discount from "retail", as those are the ones you benefit most from with a pre-publication order. This is worth doing as many will not actually be published and hence charged to your account until next year. Also worth looking at the collections offered on the Community Pricing page which are older classics no longer in copyright.

I have been looking at doctoral programs (primarily D.Min. programs in expository preaching), and was wondering what you thought of the DTh in Practical Theology from the University of South Africa? I perused their website, but found it lacking in the information that I was interested in. Would you be willing to give me a snapshot of the program? For example:

What is the cost for the program?

How does the program operate? Coursework? Interaction with cohorts?

How do the faculty function in the program?

What is the estimated time for completion of the program?

Would you go through this program again if you were looking to pursue doctoral studies?

Any other information that you would deem helpful would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would be glad to help you with info about UNISA. In short, I can't say enough good about my experience. I would highly recommend it.

Because of the exchange rate (currently 12 cents on the dollar) it is incredibly cheap. You pay by the year which at the current rate is about $1,400 including everything.

This is a research degree (same as PhD) not a professional degree (DMin), so you do not have classes or cohort interaction. It is earned strictly by research, which includes a thesis of 80,000 - 100,000 words.

You will have one supervisor and that will be the only faculty you interact with.

The minimum time for completion is 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time.

I would definitely take this route again. It was the right choice for me.

Because the school is so large (250,000 students) the information online and in the catalog can be a nightmare to navigate. I spent countless hours trying to figure it all out and finally emailed and then called the head of the department. Everyone is extremely helpful at UNISA, so I would recommend that you skip trying to read the website and simply email the chair of the department: Prof RS Tshaka Tel: 012 429 4053 E-mail: tshakrs@unisa.ac.za He will help you or redirect you to someone who can answer your questions.

That is one of the best qualities about UNISA, they are committed to quality communication with students. I have never emailed anyone in any department that did not email me back within 24 hours with a detailed, personal, and helpful response. The communication is much better than I have had with school where I was living in residence.

One other thing, you have to have a research based Masters degree to enter the DTh program. So you will need a ThM or equivalent. You cannot go directly from an MDiv straight into the DTh. However, I would not let that discourage you. You could always do a ThM at UNISA in a related subject where your reading would overlap with the DTh and it probably wouldn't add that much time once you considered the head start in reading and research you got through the ThM.

I saw the Libronix, which I understand to be Logos 3. Is that what you are talking about? I know that the Libronix CD-ROMS are compatible with Logos 4, but I was worried if they might not be compatible with a future version. I really don't know.

You never even use the CD's in L4. All you need is the activation code. Call or e-mail Logos with that and they'll unlock the resource for L4, after which it'll download just the same as if you'd bought it directly for L4.

The one thing you really do need to worry about if you buy from eBay is that that code is indeed included, and that it's not registered on someone else (or, if it is, that they intend to cooperate in transferring it over to you (which will cost $20 in administrative fee)). I'd be very careful buying a used copy on eBay, but buying a new Libronix CD from a 3rd party dealer should be no problem at all, either now or for the future.

Is there a Platinum "Volume II" now? I can't seem to find it...LOL...just kidding! I know what you meant. My take on it, try to build off of Platinum and buy books to customize your library based on your needs instead of taking that big jump to Portfolio. But if you have the money go for it.
