Bible study with ante-nicene fathers

is there a way to search for all references to the ante-nicene fathers within a particular book? for instance, if i want to see what the church fathers said about 1 peter 2:18-20 (submitting to masters), is there a filter i could use to see what church fathers spoke about that passage?

First create a collection with just the Ante-Nicene Fathers. Go to Tools and select collections. The put ANF in the start with box.

Then search and select the Ante-Nicene Fathers collection.

This should be the result:

Hi George,

Welcome to the Logos Forums! You can also customize your Passage Guide to have the ECF as a commentary. First though you will need to create a collection, I would recommend three types if you want to see the scope of the Early Church Fathers. So you can have not just the ANF.

Apostolic Fathers
Anti-Nicene Fathers
Post-Nicene Fathers

Here are some additional resources on creating collections:

Once you’ve created the collections you desire (this can be done for any resource) you can search them for your passage as Kevin mentioned. You can also either customize your default Passage Guide or create your own custom guide. You can also customize the Exegetical Guide and Bible Word Study Guide. Once you have customized the Passage Guide you can add the various Collections of the ECF to the Passage Guide to act as a commentary.

Two notes:

For something as simple as this it's faster to attach a mytag than to create a collection, and mytags also show up in the search dropdown. Though if it's something you only want to do once, a collection might still be better, since it's easier to delete.
If you want to do the same thing with the whole ECF you don't need either, as series show up in the dropdown automatically.

I'm writing my dissertation on Patristic preaching so I have most of the extant sermons. Most of the books in that collection are personal books and files where I imported sermons into Logos to make them searchable. I'll be glad to share any of my resources with you. If you can tell me what you are specifically interested in, I can point you to a source.

When i type: "title:nicene OR title:apostolic", i receive all volumes of the pre, nicene and post nicene father in addition to one other resource. However, when i add the addition "OR subject:church history", i get a couple of church history resources, but some of the other volumes disappear. Is this a glitch? I assume i am not understanding this fully.

No. The space in your addition works like "AND" and it seems the collection builder simply evaluates from left to right instead of having a stronger binding priority on the AND than the OR.

Thus it seems your rule first adds all resources with subject "church" to the existing group with "nicene" or "apostolic" in the title - then it allows from all these only those which have "history" anyplace in the fields (in title, subject or e.g. description). The collection builder treats your rule as (title:nicene OR title:apostolic OR subject:church) AND history

use OR subject:"church history" with quotes (alternatively: OR (subject:church AND subject:history) if you want to include subjects like "history of the church")

Well if I was looking for a place to start I would begin with the earliest preaching and then move forward chronologically. The earliest sermon outside of the NT is "2 Clement". It is in the Early Church Fathers set. The next oldest is Melito's "Paschal Homily." I don't remember if it is in the ECF or not but I'm sure it is at CCEL.org or you could google it. No problem finding it. The next oldest is Clement of Alexandria's (Not to be confused with Clement of Rome who was attributed with 2 Clement although it is almost certainly not his work) "Who is the Rich Man being Saved." It is also in the ECF. Most people refer to it by it Latin name: Quis Dives Salvetur, so if you see that you will know it is the same sermon. The best text to read, especially just getting started is Hughes Oliphant Old, The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures. It is a seven volume work, but you can just start with one and two to cover the patristic period. The other recent work is O. C. Edwards, The History of Preaching. It is worth reading, but Edwards is very skeptical and also the history is very brief compared to Old, so I prefer Old.

If you are on a tight budget, there are several histories out of copyright. Dargan, History of Preaching. Broadus, Lectures on the History of Preaching. Broadus is much shorter so it would be a good place to get the big picture, then you could read Dargan to fill in the details.

What books do you want to be in the collection? There are probably more concise strings that will achieve what you want.
