2012 Macbook Air

I'm wondering if anyone has put Logos on a new 2012 Macbook Air, and if they can comment on the performance?

I've looked at the benchmark test results, and according those, the new MBA wont be any comparison with my 2010 MBA 11" scoring just over 2000 on the Geekbench test, and the new one scoring from 6300. I've also looked and the specs, and there's certainly no comparison there. But I would like to know people's experience.

Using MBA 2012, my first one, with Logos 4. No problems at all. Using smallest screen. Occasionally contrast is a problem - but haven't had any tech issues. Am a Logos user since '95.

I've moved to a 2012 MBA, 13" screen,1.8GHz i5, 4 G Ram, 256 SSD and the upgrade in Logos performance is great. No more delays, fast access to reports and new layout screens, rapid population of my passage guide, etc, etc. I had been using Logos less and less because of those delays. Very good to have it back, functioning well.

I'd been using a 2008 MB aluminum, though, so this is a very large hardware upgrade.

I've been using a 2011 13" MBA and Logos performs great on it. With today's release candidate 4.5c now Logos performs great on my retina MBP!

The SSD is significantly faster, which should make a difference in indexing and searching, I would think.

Huge difference in responsiveness between a regular disk and an SSD. That's where the most noticeable jump is in performance. However, it's a smaller "real world" jump between SSD speeds. There is a difference but it's not as noticeable as the difference between a spinning disk and an SSD.

I've got a 2011 MBA and a retina MBP. I can't stand to use a computer with a spinning HHD now. I have noticed a slight difference in responsiveness between the MBA and the rMBP but it's nothing compared to the difference between the MBA and a spinning HHD.

My point is as far as the performance of Logos is concerned, any computer with an SSD will work great!

I’m probably not the most qualified person to talk about the performance of Logos because I am relatively new to the program, and have not used many of the features that much. That said, I have just upgraded from a 2010 13” MacBook Air to a 2012 11” MacBook Air. It is also worth noting that I have not used Logos for about a year.

I find the performance acceptable. By today’s standards, it is a little sluggish, especially while scrolling. I believe this is due to the complexity of the program. When you are scrolling through this program, there is a lot more going on that just pushing text around in a window. Scrolling is much better now than on my old MBA. It is probably due to my computer being faster. Indexing happened much faster. I didn’t time it. In the past, indexing is something I let the computer do while I was sleeping because it took so long. The faster indexing is obviously due in part to my faster computer (CPU & HD), but I also think Logos has made some significant improvements since I used the program last. (Also, when I downloaded resources, it was a smaller size than in the past - there must be optimizations in this area too.)

Overall, I am satisfied with the performance. I remember using a Commodore 64 when I first started using computers, and waiting was what computer users did most of the time back then. Things have come a long way since then, and now people expect programs to work without any lag whatsoever. I found the old version on my old MBA to be unacceptable (not just due to speed), and thus stopped using it for a while. I’m looking forward to using and learning this program now.

Well, I have had my 2012 MBA for a week now, and while Logos4Mac is much more responsive, it's still lacking the performance I've enjoyed on my Windows machines. But first some specs:

Old 2010 MBA: 1.4Ghz dual core, 2GB ram, 128GB hard drive. Scoring around 2000 on the Geekbench test.

New 2012 MBA: 2Ghz (boosting to 3.2Ghz) dual core i7, 8GB ram, 256GB hard drive. Scoring around 7500 on Geekbench.

A considerable upgrade indeed. Especially when my Windows machines scoring around 5000 on Geekbench, I was expecting an impressive performance.

So how does it fare? Opening references and following hyperlinks is fast, comparable to my Windows machines. Scrolling still lags, as Jason V. pointed out, much more than my Windows machines (which don't lag at all). But this is no where near as bad as my 2010 MBA where I was forever seeing the 'wheel of death'. The 'wheel of death' makes an occasional appearance on my new MBA, and then only briefly.

Now, someone might protest I'm making an unfair comparison between my Mac and my Windows machines. Fair enough. Except, I also have Logos4Win on my Mac running under VirtualBox and WinXP, and the scrolling is much smoother, comparable to my Windows machine. Though it does seem to be using more of the CPU.

My verdict: I bought the 2012 MBA to be my main machine, and as much as it boggles the mind of this 20 year computer vet., it's actually doing the job!! Who'd have thought one day, you'd have a desktop in your day pack??

I hope this helps someone who's thinking of buying. I'd also recommend maxing the ram to 8GB.
