Tried Hooton's Reinstallation Plan - Woops

I tried to use David Hooton's Reintallation plan tonight since I reformatted my home pc today. Guess what? It is not working as described.

His steps....

save your L4 resources "...\Logos4\Data\{random}\ResourceManager\Resources" to an external drive eg X:\L4Resources
download and run Logos4 from http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/LDLS4Installer/Logos4Setup.exe
choose Custom installation if you want to install in a folder of your choice
Sign-in
Cancel the download when it finally starts (it may need a few attempts)
(If necessary use Task Manager to kill Logos4.exe, start Logos4 with Ctrl key down and choose to work offline)

Here is where the problem comes. I did this and when it opens and I chose work offline, it still wants to download resources. I killed it four straight times and used the CTRL key to start up the program and every time it asks to sign in or work offline and I click the work offline and it says Downloading resources every single time.

So we might want to have someone test this and then if it fails for them, take it off the wiki. If it works, tell me what I did wrong or tell me what is wrong with the above.

Reast of the plan ...

When the program opens use Program Settings to set Automatically Download = No
If running Pause the Indexer and kill Logos4Indexer.exe in Task Manager
Type Scan X:\L4Resources (or where you put them) into Command bar & click on the suggestion
Close Logos 4
Hold Ctrl key down and start Logos4. Choose to work offline
Indexing should start (may take a while)
After indexing completes, restart Logos4 normally
Reset Automatically Download = Yes (advised)

Don't think so. But even if it does, it would be a good idea to correct this since we are telling users to go there for help before asking questions.

I agree. It should at the very list contain an obvious statement that it is not a Logos endorsed method.

I think you are correct too, we at least need to put version numbers next to workarounds.

Needless to say, the procedure was tested successfully at least 8 times by 3 users before it was refined and put onto the wiki. Yours is the second recorded "failure", but I have put a warning message in the wiki as you advised.

Tried it and failed the first time, retried it and it worked like a champ ever since. I am purchasing a new laptop in a couple weeks and plan to load it on there the same way.

The fact that such a topic is having this many people comment and read and that there is such a thing as wiki entry for this, proves one important thing. Logos needs to change the installation process to allow for this. In the installation process at the point where they are downloading they need to give an option which asks, "Do you want to download your resources or find them on your computer?" If the second option is picked, then have a browse button to point it to the location of the files.

while this would be helpful.... The major issue for me is INDEXING..... That is why we use the "Hooton Reinstallation Plan"... Resources can be acquired through "scan"

I made a similar suggestion during beta test ie. the ability to obtain resources locally!

I couldn't agree more. In Australia (where I live) broadband internet access in regional areas (not to even get on to rural areas where it is practically non-existent) is an expensive thing. Download speeds are not high, and there are fairly small download limits.

I have a MacBook Pro, and because I wanted a functional installation of Logos 4 I ended up installing it twice - the Windows version once, in my Parallels partition, and the Mac version once. That means I downloaded the resources twice - in my case 9GB twice. That is 18GB, which is 80% of my monthly peak download allowance.

If I'd had the choice I'd definitely have installed the resources from a DVD (I have a very recent one). It would have been much quicker and not used up my quota.

I would plead that Logos consider such a feature: it will save a lot of angst for international users.

In the light of a new day (for me in Oz!) I realise the process you quote above is not the one that I documented in the wiki at http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers. What you quote as coming from the wiki is an earlier method that I had documented in the forums during beta and was modified after release. The wiki method saves re-downloading and indexing. The above does not save indexing.

In another thread you state that you could not get the scan command to work. Here you state you could not "kill" the download - did you actually try to "Cancel" it by right clicking the blue icon in Taskbar?

I saw the wiki and watched the video cited there. Wish I had seen it last night.

Yes I tried to do it the normal way first and it would not stop. Kept going. Waited a couple of minutes. Then I killed it with the Task Manager. Upon restart it would only download. I could not go into the program at all. But I will be sure to try the WIKI version next time I have to do this. I also updated my Logos 4 review and just submitted it to my editor and he is going to try to get it in there.
