For a news story in The Bellingham Herald, I'm trying to find a concise description of the meaning/significance of the term "Key of David."
Thanks.
I thought this was pretty concise:
"The key of David represents authority as the One who opens and shuts the door in the Davidic kingdom (see Is. 22:22), a prerogative that is Christ’s (see Rev 3:7) as the rightful “Son of David” (see Matt. 1:1)." Earl D. Radmacher et al., The Nelson Study Bible: New King James Version (Nashville: T. Nelson Publishers, 1997), Re 3:7.
Hi Dean. If you have Logos Bible Software, run a Bible search in all passages for: key AND DavidYou will find Isa 22:22 and Rev 3:7.
If you search for keys in Rev, you will discover that the 3:7 reference is developing the vision of Rev 1:18. The Isa image depicted Eliakim robed in honor (sash), the administrator of Judah (David's kingdom), and so depicted with a key to David's house (dynasty). The vision of Jesus in Rev 1 reflects this imagery: Jesus is similarly robed in honor, and holds the keys. Of course, no Davidic king has reigned since the Babylonian exile (587 BC). So Jesus restores David's fallen house, release and restoration from death (resurrection).
Almost every verse in Rev does rest on Old Testament imagery. For details of this one, consult commentaries on Rev 1:18 and 3:7, such as:
Those are all available in Logos (though some may be available only as part of a set). Hope that helps provide a direction forward.

The whole Earth today is not waiting for the second coming of Christ, it is in fact waiting for the 3rd coming of the Christchild.
