Strange Results for Bible Word Study of δοῦλος

This afternoon, I was working to help a friend on the idea of bondslave or bondservant, and discovered something strange. In the "Textual Searches" part of the BWS, I got 0 hits in the NT. See attached image "doulos.jpg".

Of course, I know that δοῦλος is a common word in the NT. From NA27, and did a "Search this Resource" and got 126 results in 118 verses.

What's going on?

I had no issue performing this word study.

From what bible did you perform the BWS? What is your preferred bible?

First of all here is what I get:

I also noticed that your LXX count is different from mine, as well as the NT. If you click on the search type, it will open up a search window which shows exactly what search it performed to get the count. I believe it picks the highest prioritized resource of that type to search. When I click on "New Testament", it searches the LDGNT for me because it's the highest prioritized Greek NT:

I'd be curious to see what your searches display in the search window. It's possible that you need to rebuild your bible index, though.

I performed the BWS from the Guides Menu by typing in δοῦλος, not from a Bible. My preferred Bible is the ESV. I just redid the BWS from the ESV with same results.

In the translation ring, I get 126 hits. It's just in the "Textual Searches" section of the BWS that I get zero hits in NT.

I think the translation ring in our case takes its results from the ESV Reverse Interlinear, whereas the textual searches conduct a morph search against your preferred Greek bible. So the 126 hits people get are not really the same. See my screenshot: the 126 textual hits come from NA27 with Gramcord, it's coincidence that this is the same as in the ESV in the ring and in the Lexham resource mentioned earlier (actually it's not, since there's a reason that most modern bibles use the NA / UBS text - but maybe someone with a TR resource will get different results).

So my guess would be that your prioritized Greek NT is one without morphological tagging => no results.

Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you on this. I prioritized the LDGNT above the NA27, and now I get hits. It still does not make any sense to me for the search to come up empty with NA27. I prioritized LDGNT, and moved it above the NA27, and all things work now.

By the way, other BWS for Greek lemmas performed admirably before prioritizing LDGNT, but for some reason δοῦλος was behaving badly.

That is indeed strange as δοῦλος in NA27 worked OK for me! I wonder if re-indexing would work... in the Command box (top of the Logos window) type:

rebuild bible index

and hit Enter. It won't take as long as your main index - roughly 30 minutes to 1.5 hr for 70 bibles.

I did a rebuild Bible index early on, to no avail. I prioritized UBS 4th edition to the highest GNT, and the search works well. With NA 27 (Gramcord), it gives me 0 hits. Strange, but I'll leave my prioritized lists the way they are now. The whole thing was rather strange.

Which NA27 GRAMCORD? The one with or without the McReynolds Interlinear? I can reproduce the behavior you describe with NA27 GRAMCORD without the McReynolds Interlinear and want to verify you are using that one and not the one with McReynolds Interlinear.

I'm pretty sure that the problem has to do with the fact that doulos is one of the very few words in the GNT that can use a homograph number to distinguish between identical lexical forms, because there are two lemmas - doulos the noun and doulos the adjective. (If memory serves me right, if lemmas were case sensitive, doulos would be the only one requiring a homograph number, as the other two? instances are differentiated by case, as in smurna = Smyrna (place) and myrrh.) Most of our Greek resources don't make any use of homograph numbers (since they are so rarely needed and almost never distinguished in the source databases), but the GRAMCORD database has them. So it is probably an issue of starting with a lemma from a resource that doesn't have homograph numbers not finding hits in a database that does. (Launching a Bible Word Study directly from the GRAMCORD text rather than a Reverse Interlinear should work fine, as does making your preferred Greek New Testament something other than GRAMCORD.)
