Hi Jason. Welcome to the forums, by the way. [:)]

When you are using a resource with reverse interlinear capability (such as the NASB), you are able to do word studies. I think you will find that resources without reverse interlinear information will pull up the iOS dictionary to define the word.

sorry im new at this what is the ios dictionary, and what does ios stand for? also im assuming you are refering on my having to have a soure open in the second window which im trying to avoid as im using a commentary as a second source and dont wont to have to bounce around i would like to just simply click on the word and have it defined, actually if i do that on the commentary it will give me that option of course with my luck that works but the one i want to work does not :(  i want it to work on the bible

sorry im new at this what is the ios dictionary, and what does ios stand for?

iOS is the name of Apple's mobile operating system, used on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. The dictionary is a common, english one (provided by Apple), rather than a technical, theological one (provided by Logos). Are you a native English speaker? If not, the dictionary may be different for you due to your language settings on your phone.

im assuming you are refering on my having to have a soure open in the second window which im trying to avoid

No. You do NOT need to have any resource open in the second window (panel).

The first screen shot below shows the reverse interlinear "look up" feature. The second screen shot is the "look up" feature with a non RI resource, which as I mentioned before pulls up the iOS dictionary. NOTE: these screen shots are from my iPhone, but it functions similarly on the iPad.

Is there something special i need to do to get the second screen pop up like you did, yes im an english speaker,  when i highlight a word it gives me a pop up bar with these options,  copy, lookup, search, highlight, and note,,, when i hit lookup it only gives me one screen with two options search and bws, the search just searches my bibles or does a basic search,  if i choose search instead it does the same thing, so not sure why i wouldnt have same function im on ios 5.1.1?  the secornd pop up is what im looking for please tell me you can explain something that for some reason im not getting

I tried to explain, but I will give it another try. [:)]

When you select "look up" on a word in a resource with a reverse interlinear, you will get a result similar to the first screen shot. The Bible you are using has a RI, so you are getting the expected result.

When you select "look up" on a word in a resource WITHOUT a reverse interlinear, you will get a result similar to the second screen shot.

    The two options you have:

    1. Use a different Bible which does NOT have a reverse interlinear.
    2. Turn your phone to Airplane Mode.* This will cause the RI feature to be unavailable, and will instead bring up the iOS dictionary (screen shot 2)

*Airplane Mode is a feature of iOS which turns OFF all cellular and wifi data. Only resources which have been downloaded will be available in Logos, and many features will also be unavailable while you are disconnected from the internet. This setting can be found at the top of your iOS settings menu.

sorry guess i didnt get what reverse interlinear meant and that some bibles have it and some dont, looks like the niv doesnt so ill use that only down fall is if i wanted to use both. wish there was a way they could do that like the pc version. kind of disappointed on the lack of features with the ipad. cant even organize your library? would like to view my books based on tags or collections but someone told me not yet, seems like that would hasve been one of the first things they should have done due to the extensive library? anyways thanks

The NIV does have a reverse interlinear, but currently only for the new testament. Since you were originally using the NASB, might I suggest the ISV, which is more closely aligned with translation philosophy. NOTE: you may need to purchase the ISV since the full version is not included with base packages. (It is a newer translation.)

only down fall is if i wanted to use both. wish there was a way they could do that like the pc version.

I am unsure what you mean. Why can't you use both? I am also unsure what you mean by "like the pc version."

What do you mean "organize your library?" There is much room for improvement, but you can filter your library in various ways. It may take some ingenuity. The mobile app does not (yet) accept the syntax mytag:xxxxx, but mytags are syncing. If you have a mytag history, all books with that mytag will appear when you type history. Unfortunatly, so will all books with "history" in other fields (such as title). A better mytag might be HistoryReformation. Since there will be no resources with HistoryReformation (all one word), a search for that term will produce only resources with that mytag.

Alabama24-my question also concerns the RI lookup feature on the iPad app. It only seems to work when I'm connected to the Internet. I want to use it in church when i don't have WiFi access. Is there are source I need to download to do that because now I only get the dictionary definition. I usually use the ESV and it works only when on WiFi.

Alabama24 may have a different answer (hope he does), but I don't think there's a resource we can download to have the word study available offline. I would love that as well.

Rich - Gregory is right. Currently this feature needs Internet connection. The search is done on the Logos servers. Welcome to the forums, by the way! [:)]
