Why need GPS for updates?

I have a Kindle Fire. The updates require "fine (GPS) location",  which the Kindle doesn't have. So, I am stuck with buggy earlier versions of Logos for Android, unable to apply patches. Am I not correct? Will there  be a solution soon? I have absolutely no desire to ever get the Proclaim software.

You're using the version for Kindle Fire? or have you side-loaded the generic Android app?

I am using the Kindle Fire app, as downloaded from Amazon.com. I already have the Scholar's package on my PC.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you not able to install the latest version (1.1.3) via the Store on your Kindle Fire?  This works on my test Kindle Fire device.

You are correct that the app requests location services specifically for Proclaim presentation support but it doesn't require it. In the upcoming 2.0 release there will be a way for devices that do not have location services to still be able to follow Proclaim presentations.
