I just had the same misfortune I had about a year ago with my Win XP box getting stuck on stupid and endless rebootings. So I wiped the drive clean and reinstalled XP and went through all the other stuff needed to get it up and running again. A USB flash drive with basic software made it pretty simple

But I was looking forward with dread to get Logos back on it. The infamous long download and indexing has all the appeal of getting a root canal. Actually the download was not so bad done overnight and the indexing was a lot shorter than it used to be. Seemed like half the time and that with a much bigger library. All this on my dinosaur box.

So other than having to load up my personal book selections again which is not really too bad, this is almost a cakewalk compared to what it was not all that long ago.

Glad to hear that you were able to restore your PC & L4!!!

Although restoring L4 is still not as easy as it was with L3 (just copy the folders with no indexing required, nor any waiting/hoping that syncing would restore all your docs).

Resently (again) i've found that some of my docs didn't sync (Sentence Diagrams, this time). Over the past few years L4 has lost various docs. i REALY wish Logos would provide a Backup/Restore method which we could use locally on our hard-drives.

Sometimes I wonder how they dare to constantly advertise their 'secure' cloud backup when we all know we can lose things any day. They must realize (mustn't they?) that they're kind of sitting on a ticking bomb. Sooner or later someone will sue them, and from what I understand of American courts, that's going to cost them a lot.

I've got Time Machine on my Mac. I'm also now looking at Crash Plan for Windows. It's mostly up to us to make sure we don't lose anything of great value. Multiple backups are really the only way we can say anything on our computer is secure.

For Windows i backup per suggestions in Method 2 (Saves resource downloading and indexing) of the wiki. It works for now, But has several limitations:

If you haven't backed up VERY regularly, you would loose Notes, Clippings, Collections, Favorites, etc. that were not in your last backup.
If you haven't backed up since you created or updated PBs, then you would have to create or rebuild your PBs.
It requires a large amount of hard-disk space and can take considerable time if copying to a remote drive through a USB connection.
If Logos ever changes the app or database engine, we might not be able to use Method 2 any longer. (i've noticed that Logos doesn't seem to promote using these method)
Also i have run into a situation where the current version of L4 doesn't read older backups.

i think the ticking time bomb is long term ability to restore via full backup of the data per Methods in the wiki. With everything being stored in databases and the way that L4 utilizes data from these databases, its just a matter of time before i loose data.

As stated above the best solution would be for Logos to provide a backup/restore mechanism which would permanently be supported in L4. As Dave has pointed out somewhere in another post, this presents several issues that Logos would need to overcome (e.g. conflicts with the backups verses the cloud's version).

EDIT: with the mass of books that we own and use, personal documents within the program are vital. i think they are the most important data relative to the program. If books get corrupted or lost we can always reload the books from Logos. But data and its linking within our L4 installation is NOT replaceable! Keeping our data outside of L4 is NOT an acceptable method! For instance how would we replace all our Highlighting, Favorites, Shortcuts, Collections? We cannot do this outside of L4. We probably could keep Notes outside of L4, but not being able to link them to text within books seems very unacceptable.

I agree 110%. Unfortunately, it looks like Logos does not agree with us (as indicated by the way they designed L4, and by the way that I lost a lot of personal data moving from L3 to L4).

I find the talk about Logos 5 very disquieting when we haven't got anything as complete and satisfying to base it upon as Logos 3 was. Sync is a good thing but then we found its fatal flaws, and we cannot even manage our own backup as we could with Logos 3. I find the design thinking to be quite strange compared with Logos 3; not just that features are incomplete (PB, notes/highlighting) but that some essential "known" shortcomings were ignored until brought repeatedly to their attention.

Okay, I'll be honest. I think of Logos as a Bible library, multi-book reading app not a Bible study app. Why? Because it gives me tons of references to plough through without giving me a way to record & access my study - and avoid duplicating effort. The worst example: cross-references ... there is no way to label the relationship and record my thoughts equally on both references; there is no way to see that this is a cross-reference I've already looked up 10 times. Duh... want to guess what I'm working on tonight? Managing cross-references in other software.[:@] Tomorrow I may be in a better mood on the topic. But tonight I'm thinking of the professor who taught her students that your life work consisted of thousands of cards ... and you'd be good in your field if you'd tagged them wisely for easy access.[Y]

Don't know why, but I have a sneaky feeling that most of what users have been clamoring for will come in Logos 5. It may not come in the form that we desire it but something tells me it will come.

Remember some were asking for a fourm to discuss theological issues. Well it is here in the form of www.faithlife.com . Remember how some were asking for a starter edition that they could introduce to their friends, well we now have faithlife study Bible.

Lets wait and see. Many were asking for changes in L3, and all the time Logos was working on L4. For those who were not a part of the Beta, it came upon them suddenly and unaware. One morning they woke up, and L4 was here.

As a retired app developer I can tell you that excellent software engineers are those who always strive for improvement. Because the hardware and tools are constantly changing, there is always an opportunity to improve. To be satisfied is to be obsolete. I didn't mean to rain on your parade. Sorry.

It's a fact that a company that does hardware well is rarely as good with software, and that software itself is not easy to implement when it depends on someone else's API (M$) or software routines (third party). Being a software engineer makes one acutely aware of certain shortcomings but they don't affect my use of Logos as much as those who (want to) use it as a serious study tool. So I'm content to make occasional observations...

I think Lynden has it right. I spent a decade in IT too. Logos surely knows that Logos 4 represents an ambitious leap and they still press forward. It is getting better and that's the main thing. Not as fast we'd like perhaps, but there's ample evidence they take it just as seriously as we do.
