adding more ram to keep from crashing when using ex or pass guide

i have been confounded with an error message that i have posted here called "JIT debugger not found." it only happens when i use one of the guides. i have come to observe that it only happens if i use a guide for more than one or two verses. If i just do one verse at a time it works fine. My computer is 2.33 Ghz with 2.00 GB of RAM. does anyone have an idea that if i add one more GB of RAM perhaps this might solve the problem?

Howard, I could only guess at a solution, but first tell me what OS you're using, how much free space you have on your main hard drive, and whether or not you have a integrated video card (vs a dedicated video card). Also, do you let Windows manage your PageFile, or have you specified it's size?

Generally speaking more RAM helps with performance, but I'm not sure how more RAM would avoid crashes, so I'm suspecting another issue as well.

I could only guess, Howard, but it seems to me that you either have a corrupt installation of the guides, or as the guides are accessing your RAM, they are running into conflicts with the video card (integrated video shares RAM and CPU time with the motherboard), or just running out of RAM altogether. The problem may go away if you double your RAM. And though a 32 bit OS can't access more than 3.2GB of RAM, I think the integrated video system can use what's left over, since that's determined by the BIOS not the OS (but don't rely on my opinion for that).

One other, somewhat remote possibility is a corrupt pagefile, or a bad spot on the hard drive that causes a problem with a temp file. Running CHKDSK from XP is hard to get to work directly, but my son got it to work yesterday by creating an XP boot-disk and running CHKDKS from there. YMMV.

RAM is pretty inexpensive these days, and it could work. But I'm not enough of a tech expert to tell you that it will, or what else you might try first.

I just saw from the other thread that you have MS Visual Studio installed. I know it's an essential piece of software for some. I've had nothing but trouble with it. And now that I think about it a lot of "JIT debugger" errors.

If you can find your XP install disk, open a command prompt and type SFC /scannow and see if you find any unwanted changes to Windows that you can fix. Have the old install disk ready in case you are prompted to restore an old DLL. If you do, you may want to run update Windows manually to get the latest changes, if your install disk is a release prior to SP3.

Adding more RAM is unlikely to prevent a crash from occurring (except perhaps in extreme circumstances, such as upgrading from 256MB or less). (Even an OutOfMemoryException is extremely unlikely to be solved by adding more RAM; for the gory technical reason why, please see http://blogs.msdn.com/ericlippert/archive/2009/06/08/out-of-memory-does-not-refer-to-physical-memory.aspx)
