Logos hung up while trying to print to MS Word

After doing a search for a Greek word, I ended up with a results page that had Greek verses in the left column and English in the right. I opened the Print screen and selected the option to send the results to MS Word. Word opened and nothing happened for many minutes, so I attempted to abort by clicking on the X in the upper right of the print window. At that point Logos and Word stopped responding. I couldn't do anything including closing either program. I had to use the task manager to kill Logos and Word.

Does it matter that I already had MS Word open to look at another document?

How many results were returned? Can you tell us how to duplicate the results, or show us a screen shot of the search?

The same thing happens to me ever since the latest update to Logos4 Windows. I can still export to Excel, but Word is toast.

Can you repeat the behavior? Does the behavior occur similarly when exporting to word other sections?

As I suggested earlier, if you can give us a specific example that fails we can try it and Logos can log it. We likely can't help without an example, or crash logs.

Well can you describe specifically the steps you take to perform your search? What are you searching for, is it a specific word, phrase, english word, lemma, greek/hebrew word (which one)? What resource(s)? Morph search, Basic search, Syntax Search? Anything else you do to bring up the search that won't print?

I ask these questions because the problem you describe is not a generic one that happens in all cases. Without a case we can work on, verify, etc., it will be virtually impossible to find it.

Steps to create the problem on my computer (Win7, 8GB ram):

Launch Microsoft Word 2010. You will see a blank document.
Launch Logos4 (latest iteration). You will see the home page.
From the menu, choose File > Mark Notes (Any Notes file will do).
Press [Ctrl+P] to open the Print/Export dialog.
Click Send to new document: Microsoft Word.
You will see an animation that runs forever:

This dialog cannot be killed except via Windows Task Manager to end Convert File. Ditto for the Word document.

If I try to save as any of the other file choices, it works perfectly and instantly.

By the way, Dominick, I agree that without solid clues, this bug cannot be fixed. That's what I do. Thanks for your persistence.

Hmm - good news and bad news. On my computer, the Word doc comes up instantly - even my biggest note file, which produced about 150 page Word doc fully expanded.

Now good news - as I look at your screen shots, I notice Word running in "Compatibility Mode" - not sure why that is, you must have set it that way? I don't know which mode it is, so I set my Word to Compatibility Mode for XP Service Pack 3, and lo and behold, it spun for awhile and never came up.

So - can you change your Word NOT to run in compatibility mode? See how it notes it as such in the Windows Task Manager Screen? If you need that for some other reason, at least try this to determine if it is the problem. Close all the Word docs that are open, verify in Task Manager that WINWORD is not running at all (Processes tab). Then right click on the Word icon you launch from, click Properties, you should see a Compatibility tab. Make sure it is turn off, no compatibility. Run Word and see if Task Manager shows it as being in Compatibility mode, to verify you did it correctly. Then run your test again.

Sharp eyes, Dominick! The root of the problem was that I recently reinstalled Microsoft Word 2010, and the defaults bit me.

Here are steps to fix it:

Launch Microsoft 2010 and click File in the upper left corner.
At the bottom of the dropdown, click Options.
In the left pane of the Word Options dialog, click Advanced.
Scroll the right pane down to General and make sure Confirm file format conversion is unchecked

If this box is checked, when you try to export, Word will show a confirmation dialog that is often lost in the screen clutter. Nothing will happen until you agree to the conversion.
Scroll down to the bottom and set compatibility options as shown:

You must make both changes.
At the bottom of the dialog, click OK to save your changes.
Now the export should work as expected.

Ok, I experimented a bit further. First of all, I am using a Windows XP machine with Microsoft Office 2007.

The search has nothing to do with the problem. To experiment, I opened one of my passage list files and tried to send it to MS Word. When I clicked on the MS Word link, a small dialog window opened asking me what format I wanted to convert from. It already had Rich Text Format highlighted. Now here is were the problem begins.

In the situation that prompted me to start this thread, I must not have seen this little dialog box. I was doing other things on the computer while waiting for Logos to write to Word and I imagine the dialog box got hidden behind Logos' windows because I'm sure I never once saw it at that time. So someone (I think it was Word) sat there waiting for that dialog to be completed while I had no idea what was going on.

In my experiment, when I selected RTF, then the Word export worked.

HOWEVER, if, while that selection box is open, I click on the red X box at the top right corner of Logos' Print window, (to simulate what I did the first time) then both Logos and Window become non-responsive.

Now here's another surprise! After closing Logos with the task manager, Word was still open, but it didn't show up in the task manager and couldn't be closed through any of its own window controls. So I planned to reboot the computer, but as I was shutting down programs prior to rebooting, I found that little dialog window behind everything else! That's what was making Word non-responsive. Closing that little bugger allowed me to close Word normally. It's still a mystery why it didn't show up in the task manager.

I don't know if this is something that can be alleviated from Logos' end. Obviously attempting to abort the Word export while Word was waiting for input appeared to crash Logos. It would be nice if Logos could figure out a more graceful way of aborting the process.

I tried another experiment that brings more light on the problem.

I have two screens. Logos is open in what Windows calls the PRIMARY screen.

I opened a passage list in a floating window of its own on top of Logos' main window.

I opened Word to some arbitrary file. ( I have Word placed on my SECONDARY screen. )

I opened Logos' Print/Export window for the passage list and selected MS Word. I did nothing else.

That little bugger dialog box opened BEHIND ALL of the LOGOS windows. I think that's because Word opens this little guy in the middle of Window's PRIMARY screen regardless of where you have Word located. The little dialog/selection window never appeared on top of LOGOS (which is three windows deep at this point, the main Logos window, the passage list window, and the Print/Export window).

I've determined that this problem ONLY occurs if Word is already open to a file when I tell Logos to export the passage list to Word. If Word is not already open, the offending dialog box opens ON TOP of Logos and is clearly visible.

Good analysis, Jim. If you review my adventures earlier in this thread, you can turn off the troublesome dialog that precedes document conversion.
