Quick search NT Greek word in LXX

Is it possible to have an option for a "right-click" on a greek word in the NT that would "search in LXX" ? Either in the Lemma or Manuscript form - this would be a useful feature for those who want to see these connections. [It helps me to see what Hebrew words are behind many of the Greek NT words.]

If not, what is the quickest, most stream lined way to accomplish this kind of goal.

Hi Ron.

The first thing I can think of would be to just do a Bible Word Study on the word in question. One of the BWS options is "Septuagint Translation", which will provide a ring graph of the underlying Hebrew (lemma) that the Greek (lemma) translates/represents in the LXX. If you click the Greek word in the middle of the graph, you'll get a concordance listing broken down by Hebrew word the Greek translates. Clicking the Hebrew gives you sub-concordance of just where that Hebrew has been translated with the Greek word. Here's an example of βλεπω:

Alternately, you could create a custom guide consisting only of the "Septuagint Translation" component. This would end up on your right-click, so you could get the same info without running a full BWS. If you go to Tools, select "Make a new guide template". Make sure "Bible word" (far right of window) is selected. Select the "Septuagint Translation" component, name the guide whatever you'd like, and that should be it.

Just curious . . . are there plans to have glosses for Hebrew and Greek words available on hover in either pop-ups or the Information tab in these reports?

I just did this and I will try it soon to see how it works.

I should also say (admit) that I am heavily reliant upon the interlinear translations. The Lexham LXX interlinear is not yet complete, but I would like to set this as the default for the Septuagint search that you suggested. Any possibility of that?

For example, while studying a particular word in a particular verse- I could see what Greek word (LXX) was used for that Hebrew word (BHS) in that verse. Or, if a verse in the NT is referencing / quoting the LXX, and I right-click on one of those words - the data base could reveal what Hebrew word was being translated into this Greek word. There must be data bases for each of these texts that could be linked together for a quick glance on the "right - click" menu.

Did you consider using Tov's Parallel Aligned Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Texts of Jewish Scripture?

If you have the LXX with Logos morphology (or the LXX interlinear) open and the Hebrew text open, you can highlight the text in one (LXX or Hebrew), and the respective text will also highlight. This is the "Sympathetic Highlighting" feature.

Similarly, if you're in the LXX with Logos morphology, just right-click and you'll see all the Hebrew information in there as well.

We don't have such information in the NT yet; determining exactly what is being quoted in any situation is tough. But if you know the verse (many times there will be a cross-reference note in your translation) you could hop to the LXX of that verse and poke around it for more info.

Greetings! Ron's question was exactly the same as my question. I tried to follow the instructions here (starting with "Alternately,"), and successfully added my own guide (which I called LXX Search) to the context menu for a Greek word in a New Testament Greek resource. However, the section is blank upon searching. Nothing appears but the explanation about the search "This section displays a graph of Hebrew words...". I can't get it to successfully search in the LXX.

The alternative to this is the manual approach of an inline search in the New Testament Greek resource, then copying it, then doing an inline search in the LXX for some other word, then pasting it and adding the "gr." to the search so that it correctly searches in the LXX. (I.e., changing lemma.g:πνεῦμα to lemma.gr.g:πνεῦμα) That is what I manually do at present but I was hoping for something more streamlined. I do LXX searches on NT Greek words all the time.

Can someone please help or explain?

Even though you have the same question I would recommend starting a new thread in the Logos desktop forum and providing the details of what you are trying to do and what is not working.

The software, and the underlying capabilities, have developed over the last 15 years and so it's probably worth looking at this again.

Yes, but I am going the other way, from the NT to the LXX. I know there a lots of ways to do that, but there should be a nice easy way to do something so basic. I don't want to search for the relevant Hebrew in the AFAT text, I want to search the LXX term. It's simpler and you avoid the translation question (multiple Hebrew terms for the same Greek word and vice versa).
