Great to see another free book being offered by Logos (I think this is a volume a lot of later Hebrews commentators refer to), but a little disappointed it's yet another one I already own in the Platinum base package.

The value of my base package is very, very, very slowly being eroded by Logos giving these free books away. Surprise

Exactly right but that's not likely how promotional people think. They are currently drumming attention for backlist items that are in public domain. Much of this is also used to build base packages. Not a big deal, because God's not limited in blessing us.

I also have the Platinum base, and thus also already have this book, but I can't even think about complaining. I got the base at such a drastic discount during one of their specials, it will take them longer than I'll live to erode my value at all.

I'm just glad other folks have access to a few free resources, and Westcott is a good one.

Agreed that this is a universal problem because Logos stand to get a more significant revenue flow from a new user of a base package than they do from my incremental purchases. The point that most marketing types miss is that the steady flow of revenue from the long standing customers is typically what gives a company financial stability. Given the diverse purchases of the existing base it would be difficult for Logos to keep us all happy every month but a free book offer that loyal users could benefit from every three months would be good.

I wonder whether they would consider an option like converting a Community Pricing project to 'free' for owners of Platinum!

I agree. The free books are primarily intended to attract new sales, not to reward current customers. It's just business.

Oh, I agree. And with those pointing out that the free books are primarily to attract new users. I fully expect to see various CP offerings (either the collection or individual books) added to base packages in the future to entice new users as well as encouragement to current users to upgrade. Once all the classic commentaries are produced I imagine we will see that offered as a complete set.

Pretty new platinum user here. How often are the base packages tinkered with?

Except I also enter and share the collection contest on Facebook and Twitter with friends and family. I didn't this month because it's a little awkward entering and using the sharing feature that was built in (made it easier) when I own the entire collection. It was easier to click the button that automatically formatted everything I needed to share on Facebook and Twitter. It's mainly Logos users who share the news about the book of the month on social media, thus getting the word out. I don't see this actually getting the word out to new users...because your main product evangelists are not participating in the giveaway and sharing.

This wouldn't preclude a public domain...they could offer something from Chesterton or one of the classic commentary sets that just came out. But choosing something that in not in the base collection. Logos doesn't have to reach an agreement with a publishers, but longtime customers also will still participate and increase the level of involvement and the link being spread.

Of course there are users (e.g. myself) who own a catholic base package or no base package at all, but follow CP and/or PrePub. For us, it's quite the reverse: I own Chesterton and quite a bit of the Classic Commentaries, whereas the "free books of the month" were all new to me. On the other hand, around Easter Logos had a freebie promotion aimed at 'catholic' users where all titles came from the catholic base packages.

The point is: in giving away books for free, it seems Logos Marketing wants to attract new customers instead of preaching to the choir. Fair enough. And why complain when others get something good for free that I already own? But then, after all, the overall target group of Logos are workers in God's vineyard, aren't they?

I think it is a very good point, too. IMHO, Logos should think over whether the intention of attracting new buyers as well as inducing long-term-customers to share their enthusiasm isn't better served by giving away something that is considered valuable by many users. The perceived value (not the real value) of the giveaway will contribute much. If they want people to spread the word, they need to pick stuff that is immediately recognized as valuable - such as book from a current, well known commentary series (e.g. NT Wrights "xxx for all"). Of course this is difficult if the publishers don't work with Logos - does increased visibility of the set overcompensates "lost" sales?

However, I posted my comment since Philana's example was just the opposite of my experience (sometimes, long-term Logosians tend to forget those users who don't own a "traditional" base package), but mostly because of the fact that nearly everytime Logos gives something away for free, someone turns up and complains that the he/she owns the freebie. Some people even turn their complaints into negative product reviews. I think this is a very unfortunate behaviour and such unfounded criticism tends to produce a negative "mood" in the forums. And if Logos were to give away something of value, there may be even more users complaining that they paid for what others get free.

Yep ... I'm one of those non-package people (or maybe limited-package). I can't speak to Philana's alternative suggestion but choosing Wescott for Hebrews is curious. I bought the CP (I assume) at full price but I knew Westcott writing commentaries was a 'small pond' (he has very specific and sometimes less-regarded views). Hard to say what the logic is (but not complaining).

I think that it is pretty much impossible to consistently give away items that some customers have paid for, whether in base packages, collections or as individual books, without some of them being upset and complaining. I believe that Logos are mature enough to understand this and take it into consideration when deciding the next free book.

My experience to date is that the Logos upgrade prices takes into consideration items that you have purchased. I suspect that this does not included those given away free. From this I would infer that owners of larger base packages who have also purchased other collections are more likely to benefit from preferential pricing when (and if) Logos refresh the base packages or introduce additional options. I suspect that this preferential pricing will always be Logos' primary way of rewarding their loyal customer base, this won't stop us from moaning about the other's getting the free books though!

Whether or not give aways work as a marketing strategy is debatable, I suspect that there are a few people out there who are now growing a Logos Library built on the freebies from Thomas Nelson, the ESV, etc. at the rate of one book a month! To be honest I do pretty much the same thing with a well known audio book provider in the last 4 years I have downloaded 48 free books and bought 7! What they do achieve is more web traffic and greater awareness of the product.

If this helps them in their studies - great! If some of these get paying customers, all the better for Logos. I personally experienced that once you have seen Logos 4 (with the Logos freebies, the ESV freebies and very soon with the Minimal Crossgrade), you don't want to look at the always same GUI of competing free/cheap bible software anymore and want to grow your library with paid content - some real good deals, some CP, some Twitter-halfprice deals, some really indespensable things, .... until I no longer dare to look at the sum total of my order history. So in my case, it worked: give them something to play with and let addiction kick in!

I tip my hat or cap to Logos for giving us this volume by Westcott. I had it my print library years ago and had it no longer because I have been cutting down on my print books (boxes and boxes given away). So great to have it available again in a less cumbersome format (ebook). Wonderful!
