HYPERLINK

I love to add large amounts of notes in my preferred bible for future reference. Some of them are my own, but others are the result of copying and pasting. In order to save space, I would like to know if I can use hyperlinks instead and link every note to Word (2010).

My goal is to look at a "link" note, click on it and directly go to Word to read what I copied and paste.

Is this feasible?

Yes, sure. You can link text in your not to any location, inluding local files, and Logos will invoke the respective application (Word, or your favorite PDF reader etc).

FYI #1... Just a reminder, if you change the location of the file, the hyperlink will no longer work.

FYI #2... Microsoft does change the default location every now and then when it updates its OS.

Because of this, I would copy and past the notes into Logos. This way you will be searching your notes also when you search in Logos.

FYI #3... Searching notes right now in L4 is a pain in the rear-end right now.

FYI #4... I have close to 1 Gig in notes, and it does have an effect on L4's performance when opening a bible or a commentary.

OK... [:D], but how? I find myself going to my notes, highlighting the hyperlink, open Word, type search and finally open the file to look at my notes. This takes too much time and it is no practical. What I'm looking for is simply click and go...

By the way, I can save all my notes on a scan-disk

I am not sure if you can create a link that would open Word so that it will open a document to a particular location within the document. You will need to place an anchor tag at the location within the word document, and then pass the anchor tag to MS Word.

Again, I am not sure if this can be done.

Again, if you move your notes, the hyperlink will stop working.

So far I had understood the task to be "open the relevant doc" instead of "open the relevant doc to the relevant location". The first is explained in detail in the wiki. The second is a feature of Word and is explained e.g. here. I'd simply edit the link to include the bookmark reference. I haven't yet tested this, but it seems worthwile to do so. Maybe someone else can share their experiences?

I was thinking the same until I read this:

This could be search for the document or search within a document.

This is a truism and will always be so for any kind of hyperlinks. People who link to internet sites with meaningful comments etc. will experience this much more often than someone on their own machine. On the web, I'm so glad for the internet archive/wayback machine!

I had a lot of links to mp3 files in my (L3) notes when I was using an XP OS. When I purcahsed a new computer, all of my links (several hundred) to the mp3 files were broken because it had Vista as its OS. Because of this, I no longer create links to external files.

I have some links to the Jewish Encyclopedia on the internet in my notes which still seem to work properly. I do have PDF files of the encyclopedia, but have not taken the time to attempt to link to them. Hopefully we will get the Jewish Encyclopedia in Logos before our sun goes supernova.

Yes. Unfortunately, my testing seems to suggest that while the "normal" URL-linking can work with the sub-section links identified by # (e.g. links to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament#Language will work), the linking of local files seems not to support this - not with Word nor with saved html-pages.

That's bad. While I can imagine some things to retain an absolute pathname (given that one stays within the Windows world of things), or to trick the OS to refer to different locations by the same pathname, it is a problem. Moreover, while Logos is platform-independent, the local files are not: path-references to the Windows file location won't work on the Mac and vice versa. Even references to the same file on a dropbox or external medium will look different.

Technic-savy users might set up their own small webserver to accomplish this - but even then I wouldn't bet that the references work in five years time. Making a PB from the docx may be the more durable way to go....
