Church Father, J. Chrysostom

I just bid on the new collection for St. John Chrysostom. The alert item mentioned the churches which considered him to be a saint but said nothing of the Roman Catholic Church. Of course, he is a major saint in that church unless I am losing my memory.

Yes, that was a bit funny. They make it seem like he's a saint only in the Eastern Catholic churches, but not in the Western. [:)] I think he's on September 13th. I looked it up when I saw it, but I may misremember.

'Honored' isn't necessarily quite the same thing as being a saint. I don't think we have any procedure for canonization. [:D]

I find good info on www.newadvent.org.

Clicking on "C" in the list at the top of that page brings you into the Catholic Encyclopedia (now on Community Pricing) and so down the list until you get to John Chrysostom, doctor of the Church.

Also, one can get a copy of the "Menologian 3" for Windows (do an internet search for this) and download it. Then look up "Chrysostom" and the first few lines give this:

Actually, we've got an official, but very short and to the best of my knowledge virtually unused (I'd forgotten about it), list of "Saints' and Memorial Days", but I don't think it makes any claims about who's a saint and who's just worthy of being remembered (I seriously doubt they considered themselves to have canonized Martin Luther and Martin Luther King[:P]). It's mainly made up of apostles and medieval Swedish saints. Though they did leave St Dominic in place.[:D]

Okay, I'll admit that formal canonization procedures are probably unique to Catholics. Historically, it's been much more the general population deciding someone is worth remembering, adding them locally, it spreading, then finally becoming (semi-)official.

Although he lived long before the great Order of Preachers (o.p.), maybe they should have given him an honorary membership.

In any case, the set will make interesting reading. St. John Chrysostom's biography is most interesting.
