Interesting thing happened while indexing

I'm posting this to see what the forum members think. On a previous download of resources (around 07/24) my Windows XP laptop (6 years old) took a whopping 30 hours plus to re-index. At one point it sat at 75% for hours before finally continuing. I decided to try turning off my wireless connection and anti-virus (Symantec) after downloading resources and let it re-index the next time I bought something. On Aug. 13 I downloaded the following:

1. A Manual of Palestinian Aramaic Texts

2. The Evangelical Succession Lecture Series (3 vols.)

After turning off my wireless connection and anti-virus the re-index completed in 4.5 hours appx. I know this is not optimal but it seems to have worked pretty well. Curious as to what others think.

The 4.5 hours was perhaps to index just the 2 new resources, not to re-index the entire library?

In any case, avoiding calls to your anti-virus library could certainly speed up indexing, and also searching. Most AV products allow you to specify file types to exclude. For example, here's how it's done with Microsoft Security Essentials:

Turning off wireless should not have as significant an effect, unless you do have other tasks constantly working in the background over the network. (Perhaps it you had Logos on multiple devices that are constantly synch-ing it could make a difference too.)

Thanks for the info! Actually the only reason I turned off the wireless was to ensure that no network traffic would reach my computer while I had my anti-virus turned off. I posted this because others have said they have older computers and I figured they might have long waits for re-indexing like I experienced. I'll look into making the necessary changes. It's difficult to speculate as you don't provide any computer specs, but 4.5 hrs for 2 resources is very slow even for a single-core CPU with 0.5 - 1 GB memory and 160 GB HDD! Did you manually perform a full re-index, or let it index automatically after the download? Are you running the latest version of Logos 4, which indexes much faster then 1 year ago? The best cure, however, is a new laptop with prices being as low as they are currently!

Disk optimizers and/or backup programs that run in the background can also make accessing an HDD feel like cold frozen molasses. Oftentimes, these sort of utilities are set to run in the background by default. Better to run them manually.

You are correct as the laptop is over 6 years old. I did get the latest version of Logos 4 as far as I know (laptop is not accessible right now) as I received a version upgrade within the last week if I'm not mistaken. I have 1 GB of ram and a 100 GB hard drive. In your post you refer to '2 resources' . Does Logos 4 see them as 2 or 4 (3 volumes in the Evangelical Series)? I realize it is slow and that is what I expect at this point. I also now realize that I manually rebuilt indexes from scratch on the 30+ hour re-index so it this is not a true "apples to apples" measurement. Maybe I'll try that in the next few days. I've been holding off on buying a new machine till the newer stuff comes out but I do have to admit prices are pretty good right now.

I performed the steps in the following order:

1) Start Logos 4.

2) Checked for updates manually.

3) Allowed resources to complete download.

4) Turned off wireless connection (for security, not performance).

5) Disabled anti-virus.

6) Restarted Logos 4 and let the indexing proceed to completion.

You've got a very valid point. I've been resisting an urge to go into the Task Manager and see exactly what all those processes are and how often they grab resources. Since it will be a few months before I look at getting a new machine it would be beneficial. I do my backups manually but the disk optimizers were something I hadn't considered. One gig of Ram is really pushing it. I have Logos open with four Bibles, and L4 (Beta) is using 1.7 GB of Ram. When windows runs out of Ram it uses the Harddrive to compensate.

Wow! I know my system is doing some paging using hard disk space but I didn't realize the overhead could be that high. Are you using the version comparison window or 4 separate panes? Sounds like I need to either upgrade memory or go ahead and get a new machine to take advantage of what L4 can do more effectively, which was Dave's suggestion. One question, Lynden. Do you use L4 exclusively on your machine or are you running other applications as well (MS Office, etc.)? Thanks for your reply.

I'd say you were also short on Free Space (you need at least 20 GB free with a 100 GB drive) and that it is very fragmented; which puts you in the loop of needing that much free space (try CCleaner) in order to defragment the drive (try Defraggler). So get a new laptop ASAP!

Thanks, Dave. I appreciate you giving your time and knowledge to the forums. I was going to wait until early next year but now I'm reconsidering that idea. On a previous thread I believe it was you who had mentioned how to install on a new computer without having to download your entire library from Logos again. I haven't had much success searching on the forum for that. Is there a wiki for that?

You're correct, Logos sees them as 4 resources. A current laptop with i5 processor should take 20 min at most to index after the download.
