Upgrade to Logos 4 - New PC - Do I Have to Install Logos 3?

Hi Everyone,

I upgraded to Logos 4 last night but unfortunately my current PC isn’t equipped to handle the new software. No worries, I’m going to purchase a new PC later today. Quick question though, on my new machine, do I need to install Logos 3 or can I just begin with Logos 4? Thank you in advance for your reply.

You can just install L4 on the clean PC. That's what I did. Works fine.

As Tom said, you can indeed, it works well.

Caveat primarily on your intentions re future book licence acquisitions. No problem if you intend all future acquisitions to be Logos 4 type downloads. You would need Logos 3 to add licenses obtained via the purchase of Logos 3 CDs (install in 3 and Logos 4 on the same system will pick them up after license sync with the server, just as you used to need Logos 2 on your system with Logos 3 if you wanted to add a CD licence using the old license code format (install in 2 and LDLS3 would pick them up next time it started.))

Lesser caveat if you have a short term need for some of the features of 3 that are not yet ready in Logos 4, eg: pbb files

I did the clean install of the Version 4 Portfolio, and everything is working perfectly. But now I need to get my thousands of other resources loaded on the new computer and integrate them there. What is the most efficient way of doing this? (Some of those resources that I own, such as the Columbia Encyclopedia, are no longer offered by Logos, btw.)

There are however some books in Logos 3 that are not in Logos 4, I'm not sure how many. I know that the Moody Handbook of Theology was in version 3, but not in version 4. But with version 3 installed first, Logos 4 brings over your Logos 3 books. I'm not sure if this is possible to keep your old books if you start with just Logos 4, perhaps someone else knows.

If you have 1000's "missing" then it implies your L4 licence is not up-to-date, but note that L4 does not yet handle PBB files from L3. I assume that the "clean" install means that L3 is not installed on the same computer (else it would sync your L3 licence and copy most of your L3 resources).

So it looks like you might have to go to Customer Support with a licence issue.

I should have been more clear. I have Logos 3 on 'Laptop 1,' without Logos 4 installed there. I'm trying to get all of those 4000+ resources from Laptop 1 onto 'Laptop 2' after having already loaded the Logos 4 Portfolio base package on Laptop 2, but nothing else. I have a full and up-to-date copy of my Logos 3 Resources folder from Laptop 1 on an external hard drive, but I don't know where to move those resources on Laptop 2 to incorporate them into Logos 4.

Supposedly, we don't have to move them anywhere. Just sync your licenses on the L3 machine to ensure Logos has current info for all your licenses. Then in L4 type Update Now & wait for the big download L4 equivalents to all the L3 formatted books. YOU DON'T HAVE TO MOVE THEM. To get L4 NOT to install a book, you'll have to put it in L4's hidden resources list. Otherwise, it'll download an L4 compatible copy of everything in your licenses...

To be clear, even if you find & move your L3 books to L4's resource directory (hidden directory, now) , they aren't in L4's format. L4 will STILL download the equivalent L4 formatted books into the L4 directory.

You probably noted that I said "supposedly," we don't have to move them. That is the happy path. But based on various reports in the forums, your mileage may vary.

It was very late last night when I did the install for L4. I did the licenses sync in the L3, but where do you type "UPDATE NOW" in L4?

Not on the home page, but on the main page... there's a small command window. Type there. Blessings!
