Laptop component interaction

With Logos support for XP ending, and afraid to be caught on the "bleeding edge" of Windows 8, my wife of 54 years said, "For heaven's sake, replace your six year old Toshiba!" (Intel Core Duo with 7200 rpm hard drive)

Being a Honda Fit owner, I don't want to buy a BMW to drive around Logos, Microsoft Office, and Todd Bolen's slides. Not understanding how components interact, I wonder if an i-7 processor with 8 GB of RAM and a solid state drive would be noticeably faster than an i-5 processor, 6 GB of RAM and a solid state drive.

And who knows what other factors I've overlooked? But many of you do Big Smile

Steve, the i7 processor should give an advantage, although I do not know if it will make a major difference. See if you can get a good graphics card as that makes a major difference.

Logos is a 32 bit app so it can't actually use more than 3 gb (many users report only 2 gb used) so the difference between 6gb and 8gb would be inpercievable with just Logos and Office open. Not sure about windows but the I couldn't tell the difference in Logos performance on a Mac with and I7 and an i5 macbook. On the other hand, a solid state drive would make a large difference in Logos performance.(I noticed start times and certain operations cut in half). A discrete graphic chip makes a difference in scrolling performance but the current generation i5 with the the integrated HD4000 graphics works well. Although I use a mac almost exclusively but I got a killer deal on a thinkpad with an ivybridge i5. This has a discrete Nvidia card but the difference was so small I stick with the integrated graphic chip for lower noise and a cooler laptop. Even with a 7200 rpm hard disk Logos works very well on that computer. Startup time would be a lot faster with and SSD but I couldn't justify the cost.

Get an i5 with 6 GB RAM so you can afford a 256 GB SSD (128 GB is too small). The overall performance improvement of an SSD is worth it.

I have ordered a Toshiba laptop with the128 GB solid state drive (large enough for me, I'm sure), an Nvidia card, and the i-7 processor.

as was mentioned, Logos is (currently) a 32 bit app and all that entails.

However, one of the things I found to be extremely useful on my i7 tablet PC (Asus ep121, with upgraded SSD) is that I can make a virtual system and run it very efficiently and separately. and will have the power to run an updated Logos when it is released.

to answer your question above, for Logos, there will be nearly no difference between a new i5 and i7, above 4 gig of RAM. so depending on the specs of the SSD, that could tip the balance. remember there are many kinds of SSD's and some are not so hot (speed comparisons), compared to some of the super-fast HD's with extra dedicated Caching. getting the least expensive SSD, may not be the best option when looking for performance differences (you really do get what you pay for, when researching and shopping around).

In addition, 256 GB SSD's form the performance/price point. 512 GB may be slightly faster but 128 GB and below tend to be slower. If you want extra reliability go for 5 year warranty, but watch that the write speed isn't slower to achieve that!
